A 37-year-old man returns to the physician because of persistent pain in his dominant hand resulting from tenosynovitis of the abductor pollicis longus. He is upset because he is no longer able to play tennis and softball, which he used to do regularly. He has been treated unsuccessfully over the past 7 months with ice, exercise, immobilization, physical therapy, and 2 corticosteroid injections. He says, “You are just shuttling me around through all of these worthless treatments!” Which of the following is the most appropriate response? A) “Every step of the way I have prescribed the appropriate standard treatments.” B) “I really can’t discuss this with you until you calm down.” C) “If that is how you feel now, perhaps it would be best to just change doctors.” D) “It has been really very frustrating to get so little help from everything we’ve tried.” E) “Perhaps you need to see a counselor to work on your problems with anger control.” F) “You are going to have to learn how to play with your left hand.”

That's definitly D! I don't remember the exact term for this technique, but psychologist etc. often make use of it. You repeat the pt.'s feeling to show him 1.) that you listened and are interested in his problem and 2.) that the pt. tells you more about his problem

D, the technique is called validation, you are showing empathy by understanding the Pt's frustration A, would just make the patient angry

Answer is undoubtebly D,when the patient is not benefitted with your treatment and he is expressing that fact, you simply cant deny that thing by telling him something which he doesnt want to listen or agree with.So by empathising with patient 's condition and at the same time time letting him know that you TRIED is all that you can do at this very point. This will calm him down, not by just requesting to calm down without giving him a reason why he should.
