Waited for the result for a long long time & at the end doomed to see my results. I failed after studying hard enough for almost 10 months.. Did everything ,Kaplan 3 times usmle world First aid but no NBME . My worst performance was in pathology which cud make me pass probably. I did pathology from kaplan which was probably useless. Dont know really what to do now .Just too desperate right now. Feeling like quitting medicine & do something else I feel I can never make it now. step 1 is probably the worse experience of my life...Need advise please.

We have members here who had the same experience and went on to conquer the test the second go-round. The results should tell you where your weakness lies so use it as a tool to strengthen those areas. I know it's hard to to be optimistic at this point and you must feel crushed, but IT CAN BE DONE. My suggestion is to take the NBME after studying a month and not attempt again until you make a 500. Like the cartoon says...just keep swimming.

i was in ur shoes buddy, major piece of advice, do goljan for path, listen to his lectures and follow in rapid review path and get ahold of those HY notes he has, they are good for the easy points at least... i took it second time this past may, also thought it was a rough, but wound up passing.. and definitely take nbme, i didnt take first time either, or i should say i did take it, but wasnt in wat everyone consider's 'passing' range, i was around 390 or something, and wound up failing.. take those nbme's, even if u just go thru the questions, similar concepts and information is tested as it's the same test makers who make nbme questions! so it can be doe, trust me, gotta have the patience buddy and pick urself up again and get back to work.. dont dwell on it, life is full of things that make us fall, we have to be strong enuff to pick ourselves up again and push thru the tough times.. it is not over.. best of luck!

i'm so sorry to hear that...maybe u should take some time to just relax, and get over the feeling of giving up. within a week or two u'll probably start to feel better, so then reapply for the exam, and this time try to get your studying done in 6 months...a lot of ppl will tell you that the longer you study, the harder it is to stay focused and the easier it is to forget things. you have to remember that we can only hold that volume of material for this exam for so long. after a while u will start to forget things. start your studying out slow and build up to the 12-14 hour days so you dont get overwhelmed. this time focus on your weaknesses, and definitely know your pathology well, since the exam hits it hard. do the nbme's and see where you stand before you take it again. this forum has so much great advice to give everyone, so look around and maybe read the experiences of other students who have failed and are trying again. if this is really what you want to do, dont give up, because you will pass this exam...just work harder and smarter, and focus really well, and you will make it. dont get lost in depression, many many ppl have failed and then went on to become great doctors. good luck to you! i'm sure you will do great next time!

I know the feeling, I'm in even a worse place I took it 1st time when not ready and bombed Took this time and studied really hard for 3 months straight with studying for 3 months before that, and my results was that today I found out I did not pass. Now I'm looking at 3rd time......... I'm so depressed I know this stuff but when I read the questions they just make me sick, they are not written in a way that makes it easy to know the right answer half the time I just signed on to USMLE World I hope with more practice of reading these questions I can kick this problem. Also I'm going to do FA Gojan Path and Biochem (RR) I have the Path audio. I'm so sick I hope I can get this together.

Luck18 at least U passed the exam so Thank God I guess the failure is too bad compared to low scores. U can improve ur scores in step 2. Good luck for that. DRFP I guess we are in the same boat but as so many people are advising never to quit so lets give it another try. The exam is certainly not easy, may be something is wrong with our strategy. Anyway dowjunk My lowest performance was patho, & Pharm & immunology. I did well in genetics biochem anatomy embryology, neuroscience , cell biology hematology, Git , & urinary sysytems. The rest was almost borderline. I had very hard Q's on Pharma. The subjects & systems in which I did well probably didnt have as many Q's in my exams compared to ones I was weak in. So I eneded up messing my exam. May be I shud have done usmle world twice. i never practiced Q's in timed mode. & I never took NBME & I popped up a sleeping tab the night before exam may be that slowed my brain too. Still unsure where did it go wrong?

Well we can do it if we stay focus, I would not take sleeping aids before the day of the test, I would go out and burn off energy though. I studied up to the day of the test, Its been said not to do that it can mess with your head? I Dunno? I want to take it in 3 months again and I think with what I do know and build on I can pass this time, I do not care about the score, 185- 260 makes no difference just pass the darn thing at this time. SO I will shoot for the best score but be glad with a pass no regrets
