Dear All, Since my CS thread similar to this one worked well, and reduced the overall no of threads that I created, I figured I can do it again for the Match, as I'm guaranteed to have at least as many qns for this too. This thread is for everyone who wants to exchange info, and clear genuine doubts. The Match can be complicated with incorrect info, so I hope the average Jane qns I have, and the answers I hope to get, will help more than just me. Please ask/answer if you are able to. Thanks.

My first qn is here already. They ask for a 'preferred name' while filling out the profile info. What do they mean, and how does it affect anything?

They ask if I'm ECFMG certified. At the mo, it's No but will it change automatically when I do get certified?

How about the option of citizenship. Do permanent residents have to indicate expected visa? I left it blank. Anyone?

Thanks, ivonne. Good luck for the match. And to ganesha also. Dunno about EAD status, but if you already have GC, then I think you should leave it blank, coz you're not expecting/in need of any visa. Right?

Ganesha I am tempted to pick immigrant in expected visa options but I don't think it is necessary for GC holder while it may be for EAD holders. Don't know... Good luck Paheli and Ganesha in the match season!

Regarding visas, let's say I'd like an H1B. On the ERAS profile page, Is it better to choose ONLY H1B [like in ROL, they say DON'T rank some place you don't want to go to]? Or should I also check J1. I've heard stories that some progs say they don't sponsor H1, but may do so if they really like the candidate [don't know how true this is] So can someone shed a little light on the benefit of checking J1 also, versus the dangers of not checking J1? This qn sounds a little confusing. But that's coz I am actually confused. Sorry. And thanks for any replies.

Paheli - I would suggest you should keep your options as widely open as you possibly can at the time of applying. Checking both J1 and H1 is good. Why? Some programs sponsor J1 ONLY - they would probably not invite an applicant who's preferences are only H1. My two cents =)

Thanks, doc1981. That's precisely what I thought at first. Then, it occurred to me- what if I check both, then get an IV from a place where only J1 is offered, then end up matching there. The visa is not what I wanted, yet I had checked it on the list, and now I'm under contract. What do I do then? Let's discuss this, guys.

I think bbb would offer the best perspective on this. I hope she sees this. Or else I'll create a new thread so it will catch her eye.

If you don't like the J1 visa, then don't rank those programs. Then you won't match there.

Then what's the point of attending those Ivs? Also, how about those progs that we hear about, which may sponsor H1B if they like the candidate enough? How do you spot them? And how do you broach the topic of really wanting only H1B though you'd mentioned before that J1 is ok too? Those folks who want only H1B, what do you think?

Hmmm.. I didn't know you were only seeking H1B. In that case you should apply to programs that sponsor H1. If you know for sure that you will NOT accept a J1, there's no point in applying to programs that sponsor only J1. Don't wanna sound harsh but by attending an interview at a program which you know you wouldn't rank (because it sponsors only J1) is taking away a chance from an applicant who'll be ready for a J1.

if it's an awesome prog and place, then I would consider a J1. That's why the doubt in my mind. Another qn I have is this. If a prog sponsors both H1B and J1, and I have checked both H1B and J1 on my list, can they take away the option of H1B from me? on the basis that it's easier to get? [even though they do offer H1B?] Anyone with ideas? These qns are killing me! Aaaah!

If that is the only visa selection that you choose, we will not offer you an interview - waste your time, money and our time, money when you don't want a J1 visa. If you know that you will not take a J1 visa, then don't check that box. If you will take either, check both. Good luck.

You would know at the time of interview what visas the program sponsors - don't rank the J1 programs. Don't count on them to change their minds because they love you. Bottom line, if you don't want a J1 visa, won't consider one - then don't check the box.

You can't say Paheli, you can have an H1 visa, but Sunil, Mohammad and Leo must take J1 visas.
