A 37-year-old man comes to the physician because of severe back pain for 2 days. The pain radiates down the buttock, posterior thigh, and posterolateral leg. He also has numbness on the side of his left foot. On physical examination, sensation to pain is decreased over the lateral side of the left foot. Deep tendon reflexes are absent at the left ankle, and there is weakness of dorsiflexion on the left foot. Compression of which of the following nerve roots is the most likely cause of these findings? A) T12 B) L2 C) L4 D) S1 E) S3

C I think L4 gives rise to the tibial nerve and that would explain the lateral side defects. Lower limb was a blur during anatomy for me so I could be wrong.

Im confused about why the answer here should be L4. The common fibular (L4-S2) and tibial (L4-S3) nerves together from the sciatic nerve (L4-S3). OK now that weve covered that, lets move on. The deep tendon reflex at the ankle refers to S1 and S2 whereas dorsiflexion is mainly done by the deep fibular nerve which refers to roots L5, S1, and S2 Also, the decreased sensation on the side of the food is due to something with the superficial fibular nerve which refers to L4, L5, S1. All of the above has S1 in common so I will go with S1. What do you guys think? Am I looking too far into it? I dont see where L4 is the correct answer at all
