Hello I've always had this question in my mind and its right now taking place....what if I pass my last exam lets say in March, and want to get a spot in a Residency somewhere but have not applied to the Match? I know programs start in June....so is there ANY way of getting into good programs without going into the Match?

Dr.EJCV, the only way out of Match is Pre-match. which surely is gonna be difficult to get if you have not passed your steps. To have a competitive application try to finish your steps as soon as possible (the ideal time is before Sept.1 of the the previous year, Sep1,2008 for the next match) and have ECFMG certification without which program will not give you a seat. If you have only taken one step till now, your best option would be to target match 2010 and be ready (with ECFMG certificate, and hopefully some USCE, US LORs and if possible step3) on Sept,1,2009 to apply for match 2010. Stream through this forum and ECFMG, ERAS, NRMP websites to get some information which will help you to take best decision.

Not all programs participate in the Match. There are a few that fill some or all positions outside the match. Searching for those and contacting them is another option if u dont wanna participate in the match.

you can also try post match scramble; it is difficult to grab something in scramble though u may get lucky.

Thanks for the responses...ok I understand everything...but lets say for example I have this "close friend" or a "contact" in a certain Hospital who has told me he can help me in the process of me getting into the Hospital....I think my question is more related to this, do you ABSOLUTELY have to participate in the Match to get into a Hospitals' program, or if you have other means of getting in is it fine that way? Or do I have to participate in the Match and place that Hospital as my top choice? Has anyone had this experience or know someone who has gotten in w/o the Match?

It depends on the program. Some programs fill all their positions through the match. On the other extreme some may not participate in the match at all. Only the program that you're interested in can answer that. And I am sure that 'contact' of yours can get that information for you You can also try freida or scutwork for some info..Or Simply, just e-mail the PC. Good Luck!

I believe that if you have all steps done by even october then you can participate in the match......Because then you will be eligible for interviews in nov, dec, and jan...... The earlier you're done with the steps the better I have only CK left...will be taking it in the end of September....I'm still hoping I can match....The reason why I'm taking it a bit later is because I've been doing USCE and getting LORs.....I'll be totally done with that in August,..after which I'll shift from part time prep to full time for a month and a half.... Best of luck everyone!
