beiwen wrote: I've been told it's worthless to apply to a myriad programs. It's better to research and apply to those you'd really work for and at the same time for those you really have chances to get in. Definetely , my lucky number will be around 50 Programs. Consider also that there is more chances to get an interview in if we apply to Programs that has more positions available. For instance, It makes sense that there is more chance to get interviews if we apply to 10 Programs(with 30 positions each) that offer 300 positions than 10 programs with only 8 positions... Another important aspect is the the Fellowships placement. For instance, I am in close contact with Fellows in a University-based Program and almost 90% of them came from Community-University or Community Hospitals so it is not that hard to get Fellowships after a training in Non-University Programs. BTW there is a bunch of great Community Programs as well.

Good input Ivonne!! Thanks! I was also thinking about applying to 50 programs. I think that's more than enough considering the states I would move to and the number of programs I'd have chances to get in. Also, as I m planning a fellowship, it's good to know that almost 90% of fellows come from a Community hospitals!! I just didn't know that. As you said there are very good community programs.

Hi, I need your thoughts on this: I´m an IMG living in Staten Island, NYC. I can´t move from my current home due to private reasons. I´m trying to find a residency program within a distance of 30 miles. The traffic here in NYC is unbelievable. So far, I only saved 29 programs. All the other hospitals are so far away. What do you think? Would you rather travel 1-2 hours before and after each work day or would you apply to different specialties in the same hospitals to increase your chances? How do you feel about the number 29? Thanks for your input!

AnneGermany I think it depends on the strength of your score, usce, research and so on so n 29 may be fair for some one but not everyone also the strenght of programs you will apply to make a difference

hi anne germany or anyone who can help in answering me, can you please take some of your time and tell me what are the things to look at when you say that we have to research the programs before hand. let me put in other words, we have the score /visa/s3/usce/research requirements for each program in the website.......and all those will not help us to eliminate lot many programs. so what is that we have to research? i know in your case it is the location helped you to come down to 29 programs, but like me where i live there are just 2 programs...so can you please or anyone help me with this. this saves me lot of money.

I have the same question as Shalini. How to search for and narrow down the programs we could apply from hundreds of them?

Many factors dear snalini, for instance, the cut-off years after graduation. Some programs accept within 5 years, some others within 2 or 3 years and others don't have specific cut-off. So it makes sense that if I am graduated within 5 years I am not going to waste my money or the time of the Program to apply there. Makes sense? In Illinois 5 Programs were gone for me under this requirement. It is the same idea with scores cut-off, USCE requirement, citizenship (some Programs don't sponsor visas), research experience and bla,bla The above are the Program requirements and next are your requirements. Are you aiming for University, University affiliate or Community Hospitals. Educational facilities, opportunity of Fellowship placement, location. Really, there are so many things to know before applying and not 100% of the info is in their webpage. Take it this way. It is like to look for a spouse . You got to know everything. The same applies for them. They will pick whom they like according to their criteria so the meticulous work is to try to apply to programs where we have high possibilities of matching. Hope it helps

thank you Ivonne very much. it is really helpful. "is similar to looking for a spouse" really makes sense and that is why "may be" they called it a "match" but lets say, if a candidate has scores above 85 which most programs mention and does not have place restriction, needs a visa, has some kind of research lets say, and is within 5 years of graduation then u still find many programs so how do u taper from there. also my second concern is as has become very competitive, so is it good to choose from university/U-affliated/community program.......all of us want to get into the university program right.......atleast most of us.....but......how is that we have to work on this? tc,g/l

I believe Ivonne is right!!!we need to be careful in selecting our programs...50 programs would be very reasonable..does 50 programs only IM or including other specialties we want to?
