hiiiiiiiiiii

i`m khaled from egypt,,,i ecfmg certified and now i`m thinking of applying for step3,,,

right now i`m in egypt,,,,

one of my friends told me that u should apply at the 1st week of august so your results should be available at the begining of the match,,but that will cost me around 3000 dollars....does it deserve that much to have step3 early

another one told me to apply in a time that allows u have the results before the 1st interview,,,but that includes 3 weeks accomodation in usa waiting for the results,,
waiting for advice

You only need step three if you are going for an H1b visa. If you do residency with a J visa, don't worry about it now....

bbb...
if someone has greencard does it matter at all if one has given step3?
or is it the usce thats more important?

IF you have a green card, don't worry about USMLE three, unless you know that you can ace it. For some programs USCE would be more important.

That's the area that I can't help much in as my program doesn't require or expect IMGs to have USCE.

as bbb said, step 3 is cherished if you need H1-B.. Ideally most programs would have deadline for step 3 scores... I would assume that if you have step 3 score by january 31st, it will help the PD decide as if they rank you for match, they know u already have passed the exam.

Step 3 only makes your CV look nicer (if any) and a must if you want an H1B visa, to tell you the truth I don't think it matters at all or that much for the application process. I took step 3 after the match and I have met tons of residents (PGY2 and PGY3) that have not taken it and are even surprised to find that I already took it, so really if you are not interested in getting an H1B or don't even need a visa, don't sweat it. Although I will recommend that if you have free time after the match madness wears out you should take step 3 before residency. I'm so glad I did it because I won't have to worry about it during residency and I've seen many residents having to worry or study for it during their rotations... no fun! So if you can, take it before starting residency, but deffinitely not a must.
