No, you do not need that... Technically, letter itself must contain your AAMC ID... Hand-written stuff will raise a question of authenticity of your documents...

What if you had the LORs made and the cover letters signed before you get your AAMC ID?

xthine wrote: What if you had the LORs made and the cover letters signed before you get your AAMC ID? It does not matter... You have LOR request form, and most importantly DSF, which you could generate only after you obtained AAMC ID; these two must be attached to the LOR, and these two are essentially the source of info about you, your AAMC ID, and specialties the LOR is supposed to be sent... LOR is for programs, LOR request form and DSF are for ECFMG... If you don't have the last two, your LOR may be 1) lost; 2)attached to application of a wrong applicant...

Out of my 4 LoRs which i have got so far only one has my AAMC ID printed on it in the upper right corner which was printed alongwith the rest of the matter being printed on the letter head. The letter has been signed in blue ink and sealed with blue institutional stamp, isn't this what they need? This one i got it after my AAMC ID was available. Other three letters, I will write my AAMC ID on the back because I asked this with the ECFMG and they told that it can be done this way. I had got them earlier than my AAMC id. I am intending NOT TO WAIVE MY RIGHT so in that case all I have to do is send all my LORS in a packet with DSF on top? Is there a need for Cover sheet?

Yes, you need a cover sheet for each LoR, even if you did not waive your right to view. All LoRs need a cover sheet.

Thank you Justice for answering my question. On the cover sheet, would it be okay to write by hand the: date, aamc ID, applied specialty, and then check the I do not waive tab? I have a signed cover letter from my home country, however all the other fields are blank. This is giving me a nosebleed. *LOL*

The cover letter should be signed by YOU!!!!! not by the writer

You do NOT require a cover sheet if the letter is unwaived, the below is from ecfmg-eras "Whether to waive your right to see your LoRs is a matter strictly between you and the letter writer. If you already have some LoRs, you obviously did not waive your right to see them. In that case, submit the original and retain a photocopy for your records. However, if you do waive your right to see your LoRs, the letter must be accompanied by the AAMC’s Request for Letter of Recommendation/Cover Sheet. Also provide a completed DSF to your letter writer so that he/she can send the LoR directly to us in a sealed envelope from the institution." http://www.ecfmg.org/eras/documents.html#lors I did call ecfmg today , coz I had the same doubt and they asked me submit my unwaived LORs without a cover sheet and just to make note of AAMC ID on the reverse side of the LOR, even this is not needed coz you are submitting your unwaived LORs with a DSF form which has your AAMC id on it.To write or not write your AAMC id on the LOR is totally up 2 you..

Though I agree with Aashi but I have two points to mention. First, if that is the case then why on earth did they give the option of waiving and not waiving on the coversheet. Secondly, I know that if the LoRs get mixed up or lost it will be a nightmare and in a busy season like this the odds are it may happen and submitting a coversheet will only ease their work. So, I have decided to send the coversheets along with every LOR checked " I donot waive". Let them throw the coversheet if they dont need it. My only concern is it reaches at its proper place.

I asked the same question from ECFMG, about cover letter for a reference letter which is already with me. I got the same answer as Aashi has mentioned.

Oldkidontheblock: You mean I should sign on the field marked LETTER WRITER? I called up ECFMG, got the same answer as AAshi and USMLE_U. As long as you do not waive your right to see the letter, you do not need a cover letter for your LOR. All they need is the DSF and the unwaived LOR.
