Going through CS , I found plenty of time the word EMPATHY..... Does anybody knows how many ways it could be showed?? means , just a knod or something extra?? I found in one place that to put your hand on the shoulder to show that. But during History taking and without washing hands , is it possible to touch a patient???

show empathy: nod, say "ok" or "mmmh" when the patient says something. Say "I understand", offer a tissue when he cries, say "that must be difficult", anything that makes the patient feel that you feel for him. Also be nice and cater to the patient´s needs. Pull out exam table, help him lying down, dim the light if he has a headache etc.... Never put your hand on his hand or leg to console him, only the upper arm or shoulder. During physical exam: don´t repeat painful maneuvers, show compassion for the pain, ask for permission for the exam, ask if he has any questions etc.... In the FA book you can find all these tips. Good luck!
