Short coat is traditionally worn in the US by medical students. Longer coat is worn once you are in residency. But for a practical exam, I don't believe that it should make a difference.

Long to knees looks more professional. This is just my opinion, what is why I bought a long lab coat to knees.

make sure the coat fits well to you ... sometime, long coat looks funny to some guys...well, one of my friend told me that do some pratice wearing the exam day dress... as, many IMGs never wear tie during med school or for exam ....so, better practice to be in safe side...
