Hi ,
I understand that both residency and fellowship can be done on same J1 visa.....Now here some of my doubts..
1.When should I be applying for fellowships? During residency or after completion of residency?

2. when and should a resident on J1start applying for fellowships..
3.Would it be possible to stay in the U.S on J1 if there is a gap between completion of residency and commencement of fellowship?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance!

1. Typically, a resident applies for a fellowship in the 2nd yr of reseidency and you get macthed by the end of second yr.. ( i think the fellowship match is usually in may end). So, Most 3rd yr residents already know where they're gonna be doing their fellowships

2. I'm not sure what your second question meant. Application for fellowships has the same procedure irrespective of your visa status (just like Residency)

3. Some people on J1 go for fellowships right after residency. Some take up a waiver job. People who dont do either - i have no idea what they do ( probably take up a job somewhere, may be a research job)

Disclaimer: The above answers are just to give you an idea. I've not been through the process myself yet, so please dont take my answers to be totally true grin

1. You would apply in the autumn of your second year of residency. Then you would be starting fellowship just as you finish residency.

2. Same answer as #1.

3. If there is a gap, you would need to leave the country. If you didn't, you would be out of status.
