hey i took my cs exam a few days ago.i encountered a problem during the xam nd im scared tht il fail.
all my sps asked me a question while i was washing hands.and in reply i said well there are several possibilities as to wat u may be having..i do not know as of now..i have to do some blood work nd some xy test and then we can go over your treatment plan then.is tht ok.
i had saved this conversation for my closure but since i had already said it i couldnt repeat it.
so i ended each encounter by saying do u have any more questions for me?
i was courteous to every patient.asked relevant questions nd did pamhugsfoss.did a decent patient examination..though i missed a few things.forgot to counsel a few patients.one abt smoking and another for drug use.
i used transition sentences,draped,washed hands,introduced myself,knocked,verbalised during my physical as to wat i was doing.tied the gown back etc
please somebody tell me wat r the chances tht i will pass..im feeling miserable nd cant concentrate on anything?will not summarising after answering the challenging question make me fail?

they won't fail you just because you didn't do formal closure. they might cut some points, but that won't be an exclusive reason to fail you. so relax.

hey miracle i had a similar situation too.....
In many cases i said the dialogue - i'd have to run tests n imaging blah blah and then i could tell you more about it - for the challenging question......so in the end i closed by summarising the case and reframing what i said earlier in response to the challenging q.....

i read in a post here tht closure constitutes 6 points out of 23..nd u need to score 20..does anybody know if this is true..tht means u have to getabove 80 percent..is this info reliable?please reply

can somebody put up a checklist for the communication skills part of the exam nd mention what percentage has to be done in order to pass?

to be honest i dont know the split up of the scoring. actually nobody does.
whatever you read in this forum about scoring is a guesstimate. if you find such scoring in the official USMLE site, consider that authentic (obviously )

thank you bioguy..trying very hard to distract myself..but really feeling so depressed..wish they just told me my result.this is like slow poisoning
i read in usmle.org..tht cis has 3 components..but nothing very clear cut..
no god alone can save me.

dude! I took my test on April 28th. I am sure I fared worse than you did. My results should have arrived on June 18th. Everyone else got their results, even people who took their test in the end of May got their results. But not me. If I fail, I won't have a chance at 2009 match. Guess how much I should be worried. Panting Perspiring and Peeing! But no. I don't do that!!!
(I just go and live in the mountains )

I got similar anxiety after my test on June 30. I was constantly thinking about: I missed this in this case, missed that in that case. Because I have another test coming soon, on July 19, so I don't have time to be anxious about my CS test. After one week of CS test, I kind of forgot about it. So, I suggest you do something else to distract yourself.

hey i had my test june 18, and i am still stressed about it. i will tell u my experience whichj i can confidently say i worse than yours and hoefuly u will get solace in the fact that ther are many of us we don feel comfortable about the test.
first patient i forgot to drape until after mid way through my physical examination.n i draped all others, knocked on door everytime, washed my hands everytime, closed every patient and asked pam hugs foss for every patient but those were the only things i think i did right
what i did not do
Couldnt get myself to smile at all cos there was just nothin to smile about. i did not counsel two patients, i didnt check the ear of the hearing impaired, didnt check the throat in sore throat, completely missed a diagnosis in one and thus all the DD and the workup, didnt show empathy in one patient it was obvious it was required even though i was thinking it(so i looked as sad as possible. didnt put the few tests i did down on the patient note. couldnt think of obvious differentials until my paper was collected.
so yes i am freaked out, thats why i am still reading the blog a month after my exam.
