1. The letter should begin with a salutation such as “Dear doctor,” or “To
whom it may concern.” ERAS does not allow you to send letters
addressed to individual PDs by name.
2. The writer should then introduce himself or herself preferably giving a
small account of his or her own accomplishments. Next, the letter
writer should proceed by stating how long and in what capacity he or
she has known you.
3. The letter writer should touch on the following areas:
a. Your academic achievements.
b. Your personal attributes such as professionalism, dependability,
compassion, and so forth.
c. Your fund of knowledge and how you apply it to actual patient
care.
d. Any research activities you have carried out; your communication
skills and command of English.
e. Anything you have done that was beyond the call of duty. This
could be in the form of community work, management position, or
anything of that sort.
f. Anything else of a positive nature that the letter writer thinks is
unique to you.
4. At the end, the letter writer should wholeheartedly recommend you as
a candidate and should give his or her contact information (phone
number or e-mail address) with an offer to discuss your qualifications
in more detail. A letter stating that your performance was “satisfactory”
or “okay” is pretty much taken as a negative recommendation
