A 35-year-old female patient comes to your office with complaints of palpitations and light-headedness. After an extensive cardiac workup reveals no definitive abnormalities, you learn that such ‘spells’ are extremely common in her family. Genetic testing reveals that she has a mutation in the delayed rectifier potassium channel that decreases its conductance. Which one of the following best represents the effects of this mutation in ventricular myocyte action potentials?

A. Reduced overshoot of the action potential

B. Reduced duration of the plateau of the action potential

C. Prolonged phase 1 repolarization

D. Prolonged plateau due to prolongation of phase 2

E. Less negative resting potential
