epinephrine and corticosteroids both increase the circulating PMN numbers and decrease the marginating pool. they make it look like an infection with a leukocytosis, but there shouldnt be a left shift, I dont think.

whats the answer?

The body's leukocytes exist in both the circulating pool (those that are in the bloodstream - actually measured in the differential) and the marginating pool (those that are attached to vessel walls even in the case of no inflammation - not measured in the differential). Epinephrine, cortisol, steroids all decrease the adhesive capabilities of the leukocytes and cause those that are stuck to the walls to become circulating. This will:

increase the circulating pool, and therefore increase the number of leukocytes measured with the differential (leukocytosis).

decrease the ability of the body to fight infection, since the leukocytes need to be able to adhere to the vessel walls to migrate through tissue in order to fight bugs.

note: this will be an absolute neutrophilic leukocytosis, because eosinophils and lymphocytes actully get decreased relatively, because they get sequestered in lymph nodes in this situation.

Great explanation

thanx a lot........i got it.
It is basically redistribution of PMNs dat leads to leucocytosis bcoz of release of epinephrine.
In all other conditions it is due to proliferative stimulus n there is increase in circulating neutrophils. right?
