When we send LORs to ECFMG for scanning and uploading, we have to mention which specialties we want to assign them in a DSF. I just want to know, Is it final? I mean if we mention Surgery for one LOR in a DSF, can we assign it to IM or other specialty as well in a future while applying to program? Is it really then we have to decide finally, when we mention the specialties in DSF for LORs? the same way, If I mention "All specialties", and in future I decide not to assign it to one specialty, is it allowed? My other question is, How can I assign LOR to individual program?

I think programs get to see the LOR only, not which speciality u have assigned it to...assigning it helps u and ERAS to keep track and identify LORs...so go ahead and assign what u feel like and decide during final prog assignment...but this is from last years match knowledge, dunno if stuff has changed this yr..

caduceus, I didn't force you to answer my question. I posted that because there were so many views and no answer at all, which I found unusual for this forum especially. So just chill. OK?

D_N wrote: hi .. there is one question about LOR... though i m have lot of questions ... just read on the ECFMG website about finalizing LOR's writers ... Finalizing LORs is a part of making the ERAS application. You put name of the LOR writer, his dept and title, and the specialty which he maid the LOR for. Then you are asked to finalized the info, and you will need to enter your password once again and submit the info... After that you can't change/delete the info you entered in the documents section of the ERAS appln... It has nothing to do with the time/date the LORs were written
D_N wrote: can i submit those LORs which i have ???? The ECFMG says that the LORs should be up today... I am not sure this is about newly written LORs... Just try to send out what you have, and see what happens... If they return your "old" LORs, then ask for new... Otherwise, you should be fine...

you can assign the LOR's as you wish to ECFMG but when you want to apply, you can use a letter for as many specialties as you wish. you have to be careful though that your letter writers have written a pretty generic letter that allows you to use one letter for more than one specialty.

cartman, i dont know if it wise to use a couple of years' old LOR's. last year's LOR is fine. as for cover sheet, you put the date on which you are mailing it on it. i suppose you are asking about the check sheet that you attach and not the one from letter writer? if you waived your right to read the letter, then you should just mail the letter without a cover sheet otherwise, that woould look suspicious. if you are talkign about the cover letter signed by your letter writer, you will need to get them to do that for you and tehy will put a current date

Thanks tolito. I have current LORs that I'm going to use but some of the old ones I have are really pertinent to the specialty I'm applying to. That's why I was asking.
