There is no discernable difference between a categorical program and a primary care program. There is no difference in the training content, just a nudge toward more primary care in the curriculum of the program. And that's almost a direct quote from one of my associate program directors (who was pretty interested in this site when it was noticed on my screen). Hope this helps.

And yes if you don't like to do fellowship after completing your residency, there is no other major difference.

primary care IM will have more training in outpatient medicine and general floor admissions categorical IM will have more training in inpatient medicine, particularly ICU choose categorical if you are planning to go to fellowship or become a hospitalist, otherwise choose primary care
