Hubby can work on a J-1 visa as long as your J-1 visa is in order. If your visa expires, so does his.

Dear bbb,
If I have J1 already, would hubby get J1 or J2?
If he 'll get J2 would he be able to work also?
Or if I get J1 could he get J1 also?

Thanks a lot.

He can apply for his own J-1 visa, or he can get a J-2 visa off your visa. If he gets the J-2 visa, if your's becomes invalid, so will his. Most programs will insist that he obtains his own visa.

J2 visa holders can work (up to 4 years).

Elena - perhaps they are un-informed. Or the rules have changed and I didn't realize it.

must be a mistake. Check visapro.com. I know you can yourself apply for EAD if you have J2. Once you have EAD you can work.

Is it true that if you are under J2 you can't change it for J1? I just read that somewhere and it is very important for me to figure that out.
Also is it true that you can get work permission only for 4 yrs? That means that you can never finish residency.
