what r the two imp .associations ?

GI neoplasms and mitral valve endocarditis
grows in bile ,but not 6.5% NaCl
often confused with enterococci and viridians

In GI neoplasms, i can recall colonic carcinoma to be more specific, are there others too?

i believe colonic ca. is more frequently associated than others.i do not know the name of others either.

Group D strep are all bile esculin positive. Enterococci are 6.5% salt positive, and non-enterococci are 6.5% salt negative.

Most labs now use a PYR disc to rapidly ID enterococci. Group D nonenterococci are PYR negative. A bile esculin reaction differentiates these from viridans streptococci.

Thanks folks.Bactitech......whats PYR test....I came across it and just mugged it up rather than understanding the principles behind it!

I had to look it up because I didn't really know. This is a fairly recent test, and has only been used in the last ten years or so. We buy the discs commercially (and they aren't cheap).
