Hi friends, I have a question for all wise people on this forum!! I am confused about how we can rank prelim and categorial positions on ROL. I understand that If I want to go for Anaesthesia, then I have to apply for PGY-1 IM (prelim) and PGY-2 Anaesthesia (advanced position). But how can one match in both position at the same time in a particular year if they are on different spots on the ROL ? This can happen only when we offered an option to include both as a pair on the same spot of ROL. Is it really so? I am asking this because I want to apply for 2 diff. specialties - IM categorial and Anesthesia but I don't want to go through match process second time. How should we rank PGY-1 and PGY-2 position so that I am not left unmatched in either PGY-1 Prelim or PGY-2 advanced anaesthesia but I match in both position with the same match process and dont have to go through it next year? May be my question looks silly but if you try hard to go through it, you will come to know what I want to ask.

Hi drdarshan, There are 2 kinds of ROLs. 1) Primary 2)Supplemental On the primary rank order list, applicants can list several different specialty types (e.g., internal medicine, family practice, surgery, etc.) according to their preferences. Program types — preliminary or transitional, categorical, and advanced — also can be mixed on the primary rank order list. The supplemental rank order list is used by applicants who wish to rank advanced positions (beginning in the second year of training) on their primary rank order list and who also want to match to a compatible preliminary or transitional first-year program.
