Would it be a source of confusion for the Programs if my MSPE and transcripts have my maiden lastname instead of my current lastname. The rest of my documents: LORs, USMLE scores and ECFMG certification are under my current lastname.

I called the ECFMG(already done paperwork with them for change of lastname) and they told me i could write it in my CAF under previous name.

Thanks for your time!

Hey Ivonne,

I am not BBB apparently, but I could try to answer this qn...

I called ECFMG a while ago to clarify this issue on behalf of my wife, whose current records with ECFMG are made under her new (after marriage to me) last name, but her med school diploma was issued with her maiden name. The qn to them was whether MSPE should be released with my wife's maiden/new last name, and if this is gonna be a source of confusion for ECFMG or for programs...

The ECFMG ppl said that they prefer to see my wife's current last name on MSPE to avoid confusion, so I needed to talk to our medschool authorities to change the records retrospectively. They also said that if we are not able to make the MSPE with the new name, they will accept the doc with the maiden name on it, but they said that it's up to programs to be confused vs be clear about mismatch of the names on different documents within a single application...

So, if the program isn't clear about what they see, them may give you a call to clarify the inconsistency, and that should be it...

Thanks Justice!

It will be a pain in the neck...to ask a MSPE with my current lastname for sure, aside that the paperwork in my college takes for ever.

Did you ask them Regarding her transcripts? Mine are already translated under my maiden name and ready to go to ERAS. I hope it will be ok.

Best of luck for both of you in Match09!

Yes, I did ask ECFMG about the transcript, and I was told the same, and our medschool prepared both MSPE and Transcript using her new last name...

Ivonne,
unless you know what you send and know how to explain whatever they will ask you about, you are fine...
I think that the major problem can happen with ECFMG to convince them that all the docs are about the same person, but if ECFMG accepts all your stuff to put in the same file, you will be fine...
The best of Match2009 luck to you as well!!!

There is a spot on the CAF for a previous or other name. Put the maiden name in there, and use the current last name. People get married and divorced all the time - names change. It's not worth the stress that you are putting into it.

Marriage certificate is used all over US to clear the confusion between maiden and married name.ECFMG asks for a copy of the certificate as well, which can be sent to them along with other documents.

There is no need to contact your med school and ask them to change your name in all records.

Hope this helpssmiling face
