I thought that case-control study CAN NOT help determine causal relationship, CAN only determine association, whereas ONLY cohort study CAN determine the causality. Why did K note say case-control CAN also help determine causal relationship? Any idea??

A case control study cant determine causality because it determines the association of a disease with some factor. But, in most circumstances its difficult to know the temporal association between the two. i.e. you cant tell which came first. You cant know if that factor is and effect or a cause of the disease. But in special situations, say studying a genotype association with a particular disease, it strongly points towards that particular genptype being a cause of it since the genotype obviously occured before the phenotype was expressed. I'm probably not up to the mark, but i hope u get what i am saying. Someone pls correct me if i am wrong

thanks 4 sharing it's clear to me and close to what i thought (esp in that for most studies, case-control can only determine association, but in certain situations, may help determine, to some extent, the causality) but i wonder by this logic, can we say "cross section study" may ALSO be able to "help determine" the causality the way case-control study does ?

Probably. But, honestly, i am not too good with all these study designs. may be someone who knows for sure should be able to help you better.

case control and cohort study ..both can help determine the causalty ...its that case control is a retrospective study and it is based on odds ratio...that determines what odds of a particular factor in causation of a disease ..its helpful as it determines the results quick unlike the cohort study which is a prospective study and by far the best study bt too time taking and expensive ..it is analysed by RR and AR ..relative risk tells how much more likely one factor is associated than the other ,..while attributable risk teels ..how many more clinal cases are in one as compared to other factor ..while cross sectional study is a study in point of time..it just tells the prevalence ..no incidence and thus cant determine the causalty of disease..hope this helps ...and in case u have anyother query ...will try that too
