Hi Friends,

I would be really grateful if somebody could advice me regarding the following:

I want to be ECFMG certified by SEP 1 .I have finished step 1 and CS.Please tell me when is the latest that I can give CK to be definately certified by SEP 1.Also,is it true that to get a date forstep 3 in 2008,I have to be certified by SEp 1 ? Please advice.Thanking you

Hi,

As far as I know, after you take all of your USMLEs, ECFMG needs a couple of weeks (variable 2 weeks) of processing and then you'll be certified. So, if you want to be ECFMG certified, you should be done with your USMLEs and have your score reports 2 weeks before Sep 1.
After you take Step 1, you should wait for 3 weeks to have your score reported.

Now if you do the simple math: 2 + 3 = 5 weeks. So you should take your Step 1 5 weeks before Sep 1. I believe you can take it in the 2nd or even 3rd week of July.

As for Step 3, you can't take it unless you're ECFMG certified. So, if you're certified now, you can apply now and take it when it's suitable for you. It doesn't mean that you should be certified by Sep 1.

You should be certified by Sep 1, in order to be more like "perfect" and in best shape when you apply in ERAS, that's all.

However, I wish somebody share his/her input, cuz I'm not really 100% sure of what I have.

Just do not sacrifice a good score for rushing to Match09. Take NBMEs to know where you are standing. Step 3 is more important if you need H1B visa but USCE is the priority.

Actually the reason I want to be certified early is because that is the last day for receiving applications for those who want to take the exam in 2008.Thanks again for the advice

well,
i think u dont have to wait for the physical certificate. 2 days after u receive ur results of ck, you can call ecfmg and inquire about the day ofur certification which is the most important thing for the application.
i am in the same boat with you. so i think august 5th is the last date to take the exam if u wanna catch sep 1st.
any other opinions from our colleagues who are certified?
