04/24/08 - 03:56 PM report #1 i hav got three options for usce.i will tell u about them one by one psychiatry externship its at a distance of like one and half hr from here.so i will hav to shift in area.can odd job with less hrs.living expanses will be like 1200 dollars per month.its totally volunteer for one month.as for its type is considered its high rated type but speciality is not of my interest 04/24/08 - 10:28 PM report #5 ok leave for a while tht whether research is usce or not...just advice me wht to do i wana enter in medicine or paeds residency programme No hard feelings but what do you exactly want ? I`m confused . Don`t show your medicine observership in CAF in ERAS if you want Psych . Prepare something that only talks about psych....all the lors should be from psych too . Good luck .

I'm really happy to see that the Psych forum is showing signs of life once again. I too am a 2009 match applicant. I have really bad credentials though. 2002 grad / 75 / 76 / CS pass (all first attempts) Couple of months of Psych experience in my home country. Been working in the US for the last four years as a Medical Assistant (but not in Psychiatry.......IM and related subspecialties). I couldn't find any Psych jobs in the city where I live. Could not afford to volunteer or move. I might get a job offer next week to work as a Medical Assistant in a Psych private practice but don't know if I should take it this close to the Match. I know my chances of getting a residency are not good but I'm putting all my eggs in one basket and applying only to Psych programs.

A friend that got in into Psychiatry told me this The MOST important thing they are looking for is that YOU are really into Psychiatry and not as a fallback plan. You can have low grades like my friend but she had some observership in psychiatry and some volunt work in psychiatry and guess what they were not in USA but in her home country. JUST because of her hones and sincere pursue of PSychiatry they gave her a prematch. And I will add she had 2 attempts in step1 and step2 ck and she need a visa and graduated 2000 I hope my 2 cents with this true story might help you a little.

your friend's story is truly awe inspiring GOGETA..........but i cannot do volunteer work. i have to send money home to my folks every month as they don't have any other means of income not to mention pay the rent and bills here. i'll take my chances and still apply ONLY to psychiatry programs as that's what i eventually want to do. lets hope we all end up matching or prematching this year.

Hey guys ! I'm a Psych candidate myself ! I always only wanted to do Psych and never considered anything else . I have 95 in CK ( first attempt ) , passed Cs ( first attempt ) , preparing to re-take Step 1 ( failed once ) . I have 3 observerhsips - 2 in Psych and 1 in Internal Med I need a work visa . Good luck everyone ! It would be helpful if someone would post places where they offer prematches as we can see they are not as frequent as the prematches in Internal Med .

Glad to see that our circle of friends is growing. MDP I think you have a very good chance of getting accepted to a residency program. Sadiq Naveed........you're right I don't need a visa.

Thanks cartman.. I think we need to find information about the program which are generous towards IMG. I hope our seniors can help us in that.

It’s assuring… Any of you knows a friend who got match with below average scores…? I think his experience will be of immense help… One friend of mine got in NY program… good credentials 87/97/cs/step3 pass.. With good research experience…

I'm nervous......I don't have any US psych experience. The Psychiatry Offices in this city are impenetrable. I'm tired of banging my head against brick walls. Four years of USCE and nothing in Psych. How am I ever going to convince any PD that I'm genuinely interested?

cartman.. Keep your cool buddy... We all are in same boat... don't keep all your eggs in same basket… FM is a good option for you… and also pathology… Make a plan B... Your thought process will become clearer… You are in the land of opportunity… Cheers… buddy

Thanks MDP for the moral support..........I'll think about the plan B but Psych is really my passion. I only have 3 mths of experience in psych in my country but those 3 mths totally changed my complete outlook on life. The internist I used to work for did see a lot of Psych patients (psych conditions in chronically ill patients.........or the more stable psych patients) and she has mentioned that in her LOR. Hope that will help some. I'm not cut out for Family Medicine.........I simply cannot deal with kids. Even in school I struggled through out my Peds rotation. Internal Medicine maybe........but right now I'm pretty hell bent on getting into Psych. How??????? I still have to figure that part out......
