A genetic element is found to contain several genes and to catalyze its own movement within and between chromosomes. Inverted 35-nucleotide repeats are present at the ends of this genetic element. This genetic element in hepatocytes is incapable of replicating independently. Based on this description, this genetic element is best categorized as which of the following?

A) Complex transposon

B) Insertion sequence

C) Plasmid

D) Regulon

A= MAY BE
BUT I AM NOT ABSOLUTELY SURE

  #3

i too think its B

  #4

I think A too, but not sure

can anybody define transposons and insertional sequence...?

  #6

Trasposons are pieces of DNA that move readily from one site to another, either within or between the DNAs of bacteria, plasmids and bacteriophages. They are also called jumping genes. They can cause mutation in the gene into which they insert, or alter the expression of nearby genes. They have four identifiable domains. On each end is a short DNA sequence of inverted repeats involved in integration of tranposon into recipient. Second domain is the the gene for trasposase which is the enzyme that mediates the excision and integration precesses. Third is gene for repressor, and fourth is an enzyme mediating antibiotic resistance gene.
Transposons are not capable of independent replication, they replicate as part of the recipient DNA.
Insertion sequences are a type of transposon that has fewer bases (800-1500) since they do not code for their own integration enzymes. They can cause mutations at their site of integration and can be found in multiple copies at the ends of larger transposon units.

Now i know for sure the answer is A, hope this helps, the source is microbiology, Jawetz 7th edition.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT EXPLANATION

  #8

Thanks a lot rida you did correct me smiling face

  #9

Actually Asmi my answer was just a shot in the dark, but i am glad we discussed it and I got to look it up cuz now we all understand it grin

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  #11

This is better thanks for all

  #12

thanx rida..good job. hoever i still dont get how we distinguished between a and b based on the question.

about complex transposons...

In addition to occurring autonomously, insertion sequences may also occur as parts of composite transposons; in a composite transposon (also known as a "complex transposon" or sometimes simply referred to as a "transposon"), two insertion sequences flank one or more non-transposition genes

I TOO THINK IT IS A

  #15

thanx for the details rida...
