wanted to know if I learn driving in USA how much time would it take to get a license?? does it effect our car insurance??

and should i buy a new car or go for second hand?? I dont want to spend too much money on it but also want to buy a good one as i'll be keeping it till end of fellowship.

Buy a new one. leaves you away from all the hassels. New car would get a good resale price

oh i missed one important point in ur post.

You dont know how to drive. Well i suggest you start driving in ur home country and get a good load of practice. Cos here its pretty much easy and driving lessons are a bit expensive me thinks. So learn to drive in ur home country. and then in US driving is mostly systematic. Not many hassels. Just remember to READ the Signs on Road not the beautiful chic work shirt in the store and you will do fine.

Yes driving in the states is mush easier ... there aren’t so many jerks trying to bump into you from all sides ... idiots driving in the opposite direction ... crazy drivers flying through intersections ...

But to get the license you need to study and take a multiple choice exam.

Over here, (not in the US), the officer just asked me what the (H) sign was and I passed. grin

absolutely important - go for Toyota or Honda.
give me a PM, i will give you tips on how to haggle for a price.
Toyota/Honda used cars are also good deals and saves you money compared to brand new.

Step #1: Take a multiple choice driving test (you can get a free book in the closer secretary of state of your city) and a quick vision exam. These tests are done in the same office. Keep in mind that it may be different in each state. I took it in Michigan and it was $28.00. After this you will get a like a driving permit that will allow you to practice with someone that already has a driver licence.

Step #2: If you already know how to drive then just practice a little bit in the highway, in the city and parking. If you don't know how to drive which was my case I didn't pay any driving classes, just bothered my friends with driving licence to let me practice with them.

step#3: Give the road test(the price varies because they are done by private companies, I paid $60.00 and get your driver licence!!

Regarding buying a car I think it depends on your budget you can buy or lease a car. I found more easier to buy a used car for now, it is already mine, I don't have to make payments every months and it works fine. Of course try to get a car that is cheap in gas since the price of the gas is very expensive right now.

The insurance depends on the type of car and if you want partial or full coverage.

If you are already in a residency program buy a new an nice car please gringringrin. I would...

grinI will tell you my story.
I came to the states and I need it a driver license but no car and no insurance.\could not rent a car because to rent a car I need a driver licenseconfused
So what I did was to go and take the free little book they have for the exam read it and lean it very good, then I went and took the test that is writting and I passed.
But did not had the driver test because no car.
You will ask why I wanted if I did not had a car, well because of you never know and be prepare for anything type of thing.

So a lady from from India that work with me ask me if I hd driver license a said no, she ask why I told her and she said what are you doing now, I said I just finish work going to my house, she said do you know how to drive I said yes, she said OK come with me so you take the driving examshocked HAVE in mind I only knew the lady from hello hello and good morning good afternoon.
We went to the place but the little problem is that she had as a car a very VERY luxurious car and she trusted me to take the driving license.

Now for the people that might be thinking something else she was pregnant and happyly married at that moment, and today she is still hapilly married with the guy.
OK now that we have clear that up, I took the test and passed grin

Then she told me about a website that has all the questions for all the estates exams for driving licence and is free to look I was just hiting my head when I saw that website, the same questions I had.

If someone is letting you drive 2-3 hours everyday we are talking about 2 weeks you are ready to take the driving exam with no problem.

If you are gong to buy something buy JAPANESE and go with honda accord or toyota corrola, cheap and good with gas and good realibility.

lol! It is a test for extra ocular muscle movt. You move your finger in front of patient's face in the shape of an H, and ask them to follow it with their eyes only [i.e. not moving their head]

p4a99, I thought I'd see you sitting in it or something. How do you expect me to believe that? Can I post a pic of me flying my uncle's NASA rocket? There I am..... sticking out tongue
