hi there, i went to pass program recently, and dr. francis told us that USMLE updates their questions every 3 days. now i dont mean, every 3 days its a new set of questions, but if there is a change in what drug is of choice, they can update their questions/answers in 3 days, pertaining to that change.

also that.. when you write your step 1, you are competing with everyone in your tristate area who wrote their step 1 on that same day. that is a LOT of competition. disapproval

so he says that his students who wrote it in areas with very few medical schools in that state and around those states, got pretty good scores, compared to his students who wrote it in busy states with med schools.

also, he said that, students who wrote it in a city with many medical schools competed with many many many students writing their step 1 that day versus students writing it in small boonie towns with no medical school around . the ones in the small no name medical school areas got alot higher.

also-- canadians (thats me!)- for canadians, the day we write it, they just take the median of all american students writing it that day, and compare you to it. -which reeks!!

hope this helps some people

shocked Thats news to me..!

Does that apply to IMGs as well.. I am in New Delhi, India and 4 of the best 10 med schools in India are here and also few other med schools in and around New Delhi.

Should I consider taking my exam somewhere else raised eyebrow

You know, someone told me the same thing several years ago. But Daugherty from Kaplan told us you're not competing with anyone really..you're competing with the test. So who knows. Any suggestions on locations with high scores?

I am not sure how acurate this is. I heard different opinion from other Doctors and books.

HI starbrite ...well iam amazed ,i never heard that u r scored based on the loads of testtaker in the state and u can score better in those states where less students wriet usmle step 1 ...i dont know how dr francis can make that statement does he have concrete evidence for that .....well thank u for keeping us aware but i highly doubt it

Im still not very clear about how they calculate scores, but I think the general rule applies here. the more Q’s u ans correctly , the better u score. N two digit score is not percentile (rite? ). So how does it matter where or which day of week u take ur exam? Shouldn’t the goal b to know more , remember more so that we can ans more qs correctly?

I think this all does not make any sence...I mean state wise...

i dont think where you take the exam really makes a difference...and i dont think you compete against other students taking it the same day, since i always heard the exam is never graded on a curve.

either way, i think the number of questions you get right determines your score, and nothing else...grading any other way would simply be unfair.

hi everyone..
sorry i never realized there were replies to my post.

I am simply passing on what i heard, i do not know how accurate this is. plus, i think that sometimes if one isn't from that particular area they don't pay attention to the information regarding it. maybe its not accurate in regards to canadians, but since most of the students there aren't canadian, no one cares to pay close attention.

not to worry others, just wantin to bring up something i heard.

i plan on driving out to peoria , il for my exam. bc there are no med schools in that area. i guess im just paranoid
