Don't waste money, check the states requirements before applying to them: http://www.fsmb.org/usmle_eliinitial.html

What is wrong with Alaska and Idaho? They just want to prove themselves?!

Kind of confused: this is about Initial Medical Licensure... Not even step 3 application... So, you think that those who have attempts in any of the steps should not apply even for a residency in those states? Either I misread the link, or... However, most of the states either have NO limit on the number of the attempts, or 2-3 (some states up to 9)... So, Arlete, I would suggest people to relax... There is enough opportunity for everyone...

Oh and Michigan, 5 years to do all steps including Step 3. In some circumstances that is impossible.

For Ohio, they say the following: Seven years to complete USMLE or COMLEX (possible waiver for MD/PhD degree candidates and individuals with personal illness) For Michigan: 5 years to pass USMLE Step 3. This is different from 5 years to complete USMLE (usually 7, see above)...

Then what does "5 years to pass Step 3" mean?

I don't really know what it means, and I posted to have help from you too. Don't we need "Initial Medical Licensure" to be residents in those states? I don't want to cause panic, but I saw a lot of people getting lists about residency programs criteria only, and applying to 150+ of them, not considering this information above. I am just thinking there's a way to avoid wasting so much money. Just in a personal note: I am applying to 2 programs only, so don't think I have an ulterior motive to talk about this. I don't have competition, since God is deciding my future for me.

If you are only going to apply to two programs that means you are deciding for your self. Do your best apply every where reasonable and then God will decide for you.

P4a99: There's only one place reasonable for me, that's where I am going to be a resident! Nowhere else in the world is worth for me. There's only so much sacrifice I am willing to do, and God knows all about it... I know I am going against all statistics, but I did that when I entered college too, it worked! I'll keep you posted, please pray for me...

I understand that. But if (Ill repeat, if) you end up not matching there, you will waste another year waiting for a bloody residency spot. Because three of you are being wishful, I need to play the realistic guy. Please, have a plan B .......................................................... and C.

Thanks for the wishes, guys. Thanks for being realistic and giving your opinion, P4a99. It makes a lot of sense and it's what I would call "evidence based", but I am opting for an "experience based" decision. I promise I won't do that as a professional. My plans B and C will be a bridge I'll cross when and if I get there (I'm avoiding premature tears), and will probably NOT include Medicine. I don't believe God will let this happen, I was born to be a doctor and there's nothing I can do to reach my full potential other than that. But I have other wonderful things going on in my life and we can always help other people out, one way or another.

arlete, that's the right attitude! you go, girl! I will be rooting for you! as of the licensure stuff: in the majority of the programs if not all you DON"T NEED THAT INITIAL LICENSURE! the programs supllies you with a training license for the duration of your residency. some people still apply for the state license in order to be able to moonlight outside of the teaching facility.
