working out is great, yah u get tired, but then u get ur cardio in for day, u get to relieve the built up stress, u come home tired and go to bed and get solid rest.. also venting was good but to those who understand what usmle is, others may not give a crap so much.. they think 'it's just an exam!'.. as for music, i liked during workouts! and sex, well that'd be good pending u have a willing partner, but again we're back to just straight up cardio!!

that is one topic i def have no answer to. i am a stressfreak! but i think that if you divide up your space it can help. like, study in one regular room or anywhere but your bedroom and family room. that way when you set down to nap, have some spare time, or watch tv, you are not in the room you are normally stressing studying with. it helps your mind psychologically seperate the stress from fun times. Also if you plan ahead and figure out how many days to read what, well in advance and have days left over, you will be stress free, well somewhat. because you will have a plan that makes sense and not freak! also, avoid talking to people about step 1 that dont know about it. i talk to my friends doing psychology about step 1, and they just give me plain "dont worry" advice. and it is frusterating. you can talk to friends who have written step 1 and know what you are going through, but make sure they are in your best wishes and wont intimidate you or make you feel bad. ** actually in general- to be stress free- ensure you are around people who dont cause you stress! avoid nagging parents, competing friends, or those that slack off (sometimes you start stressing about their lack of care!), avoid those who don't see in your best interests. I really believe in negative auras, and i have a few friends that unfortunately contribute to that. try to avoid telling too many people about your concerns or worries, esp school wise. if everyone in your social circle knows how badly your doing in a subject, its on their mind when they see you, and ultimately everywhere you go, whoever you talk to, tht's on your mind and "in the air". the less people that know your stressed the better- cuz you can put on a happy face, and if you act like your happy and relaxed, it will force your mind to try and relax a bit too. i try to only stress to prep4usmle people lol. because they don't know me, and i only run into them on these boards also have one fun thing to do daily. whether you arrange to watch your favorite tv show, or you talk to a friend on the phone do something!! when i was studying hours and hours a day, i would arrange to eat my meals while watching my fav tv shows. that way i squeezed in some time. and naps are heaven! alot of studies show your brain shuts off after one hour of learning. so try and take a 10 min break each hour. even if its to use the bathroom, take a nap, get some food in you, it will be easier to return back to your study table

oh also- clean! you don't have to clean, but make sure your environments are tidy. I don't know about you, but i have come to serious tears if my study place was a mess, because psychologically a mess in your space can make you feel like your life is also a mess. and realize-failing is not the end of the world!!!!! this profession is understood by anyone, near and far to this profession, at how hard and painstakingly difficult it is. It does not come easy, only to same rare breed is it a breeze. If you fail-realize that it was meant ot be, perhaps to try harder the next time around and get a way better score then you were meant to get originally! realize that , this is a mere few months or years in your life, later when you are practiciing you will laugh or shudder at the time you are in now-but realize it was all worth it. we can all crumble and hide but picking yourself up and facing the light-is the first and most important step on this amazing journey. realize there are those rooting for your victory, and those for your failure. You better love yourself enough, to be rooting for yourself and giving yourself unconditional encouragement and support!

I think it varies from person to person .. Exercise , going out , watching a movie or listening to music they all help relieve stress For me I play Xbox with my cousins and during those hours i forget that i was even preparing for something and get back to studies later with fresh enthusiasm. It works well for me

Good to get 5.. 10 min break each hr or each 2 hr atleast, 3 hr non stop if want to , make sure have snack, drink near by so , will not get up & lost in other room . So for 1 or 2 hr after break, do run to w/r , run to grap snack or drink liek u r in between lecture in med school , taht makes u light , worry free , study , have fun, break snacking but back to book asap . Also put alram on ur phone depends like am, noon, pm early evening, , then night , late night , so eevn u ends up sit at TV , ur alarm will ring , get up asap then run to study desk . That works for me especially remind me to stop browsing, say time to study , also time for bed so will not ends up study too late then u have to study early since not going to stay up really late . Try it , takes only few days to b in the flow . ur welcome . Also true as starB said, avoid all negative ppl & keep study place clean .. BUT pl pl do not have to clean the whoel house daily ........... but it's another way of destress , when try to clean up quick in living rm etc , so u will have nice escape clean place for ur long break 1 or 2 times a day . I also eat & watch TV to save time , but u feel u r normal since u still able to watch Tv ..news, show etc . We can keep this thread alive , put any new found destress here . GL

about taking too long breaks- dont tell yourself its a break. when you get up to use the bathroom for a second, you might pass the kitchen grab something to munch on, talk to someone around you. your few second break might turn into a few minutes. try to keep maybe one or two designated breaks for a few minutes. The other breaks avoid trying to put too much of a time break on them, or else they will extend. mix it up- try to do questions while eating. or have someone quiz you while your getting to lie down or eat your meals.
