it's not a stupid question firstly because just think like this.. the reason why this absurd rumor has started that one MUST apply on sept 1 with EVERYTHING at hand is nonsense because most programs that dont offer prematches will wait for the american kids dean's letter which comes out on november 1st, so any program that usually offers interviews before that time is usally seeking pre-match seats to be filled so they dont risk losing out on empty seats..

after nov 1st, deans letter comes out and then they can now compare the 'total' package of applications amongst the fmg's who already had their applications sent in sept 1, programs dont really bother to look at until they can compare it to their american kid applicants until AFTER nov 1st.. that's why i never understood the hype with this obsession with sept 1!! i mean it makes sense rite, the programs who just dont want to go empty are willing to fill their seats early in the application season even if they offer visas, they just want to fill their seats rather than lose money by having empty seats!!

so honestly, i've talked to several ppl who applied and friends who are now attendings and they say the same thing, which is after nov 1 programs will start to actively seek interviewees b/c why do u think the deadline for a lot of programs are nov 1?? makes sense rite.. so relax, take ur exams, get great scores, get certified before applying, u can safely get interviews if u apply after sept 1... that rumor should be buried!!

i knew of a girl who applied early on, heard from few programs, then re-applied to more programs mid-nov, and heard more from the programs after the second bactch of applications which again i feel makes sense b/c if you apply so early, really it just 'sits on the backburner' until they get their american kids' applications, and once those roll in with the dean's letter, no one's paying attention to img's applications that arrived sooooo early!! so i dont worry so much about the sept 1 deadline and early interviews, apply to the programs u feel u have ur best chance at and hope for the best!! it's the biggest sales job ur ever gonna pull!! nod

I disagree with hottie 99, it is always good to apply in IMG friendly programs as the interview fills up quickly. If you are talking about top notch programs than hottie99 is right.

  #4

I am sorry I mean to apply early to IMG friendly programs early

I agree with dream09, u get very few calls in Nov. late sep to oct is the time when u get most calls...And there are gud community programs who surely dont have fear of having their seats empty but these programs also dont wait till nov to invite all the applicants...And things have changed in the last few years. The number of applicants is increasing every year but the number of seats remains almost constant. So programs are not able to actually stick to the deadlines they state.
I would strongly encourage everyone to apply on Sep 1 if they could. This is not to say that applying early is better than getting a good score.
Hottie seems like u r talking abt university programs and an excellent candidate to whom it would not matter much if he/she applies late, coz he would be desirable anyway.

sorry guys, but nov 1 is a deadline a lot of programs have, yes it's not bad to apply on sept 1, im just saying it's not the end of the world to apply mid-oct and onwards.. and yes im talking in the last few years.. i dont need a visa, so im not sure if it's different for thos, im just saying that those prematches that are offered in early sept for h1 visa ppl are usually with programs that want to fill their seats and dont want to go left unfilled and have to scramble in march.. and that's is what gogeta askeda bout..

1. Programs that offer interviews early – some programs with no IMGs like univ of Washington, seattle, peds, offer interviews early October (its there on the website; says the weather is best at that time!); My first interview in 1st week nov was at Iowa which rarely gives prematch.

2. Program that offer prematches early will also offer interviews early ( so by corollary maybe the rumor is partly true but not close to completely) are those programs that need to fill there seats…According to me, it is always a good idea to keep a number of such programs in hand for any IMG, no matter how qualified….things can take unexpected turns during IV season and its good to be prepared with a few prog u can fall back on. So as dream09 said, these can fill up quickly and so applying to these is a good idea.

3. Importance off MSPE--Most programs understand that MSPE isn’t available or reliable for IMGs…but if they want IMG ( for many reasons—they may have a diverse patient population; AMGs don’t want the place, they want the best from all over the world…whatever) So do u think they will wait till MSPE is released to chose their IMG candidates?? So why not offer early interviews?? Not just coz they want to give prematch but because they want to get done with candidates an there is no reason to delay!

4. Agree with Hottie on this--Many programs that offer prematch are top notch programs--but they offer prematches later into the season around december end jan..for 2 reasons, one they need to see all candidates before deciding and also because many candidates will not accept offers so early into the season before they have seen other programs…2 way thing.

1. Applying early, Personal experience—I got 10 interviews between oct 12th (date I got certified) and nov 1st (when my MSPE was released)—so certification is important for getting interviews; BUT I had applied to all these programs in early sept WITHOUT my certification—so it didn’t harm did it?

2. there are programs that require u to be certified before applying and those that don’t ---do ur home work find out the ones that don’t require u to be certified and definitely apply early to those (what excuse do u have not to!)

3. I have said this many times and it remains a personal opinions of course but will repeat it again here—apply as soon as u can…sept 1st itself? There isn’t such a hurry …however mid oct…definitely no no

Mukho, even if a program needs one to be cerified, can i not aply to it early (i.e. when i am not certified) and update them later with an e-mail or phone call... is there anything wrong with it?

yeah hitesh, so i wanted to write this also--i got ALL my rejections after certification; meaning there wasnt any program that disqualified my application saying just coz u arent certified we wont wait...
i applied to all my programs early, irrespective of there certificatin requirement, had written to a few asking if that was ok and when they said yes, i went along and applied everywhere...i got bak 2 responses saying my application was incomplete and would be reviewed only when complete...i later got an IV from one of those

So by personal experience i would say apply to all...but maybe u should confirm from a few prog too

Thanks.. Man!, do you have answers to everything or what? grin

First of all I will like to thank all of you that have gave their opinion.
Is true that we as humans based on our exdperience and based on what we have seen might have a different point of view. Having say that I think that we all learn and benefit from the diferent points of views.

We can debate a point in a profesional level because guys we all are doctors and have the education to have a constructive argument.

I also notice that since a thread where people talk about densi or desi there have been some tension between some of you guys. lets agree that we disagree in some points and not make it in something that is not.
