1. A 60-year-old man comes to the physician's office because of confusion and inability to concentrate. Which of the following is the best way to assess his concentration?

A) Calculating the sum of four numbers

B) Recalling four unrelated words after 5 minutes

C) Repeating a digit sequence backward

D) Reproducing figures from memory

E) Writing from dictation

  #2

B) Recalling four unrelated words after 5 minutes ?

  #3

what is the ans, asmee

  #4

We don't have answer for it

piter can u explain it ?

  #5

i think it's from Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination
one of the istructions to the patient is - Recalling four unrelated words after 5 minutes
but now i think the answer can be C) Repeating a digit sequence backward

  #6

I think since concentration is related to frontal lobe...E is the answer

  #7

No, E would be test of arcuate fasiculus/wernickes/brocas

The only one that appears in the MMSE is B.

  #8

Option C tests concentration.
Option B is more likely a test for short term memory.

  #9

Got it its C, thanks piter n all

  #10

Option B is the correct , It is the one to assess ability to concentrate.

I still have question for answer C: doesn't "repeat a digit seq backward" need short term memory? I mean, you need to remember the digits first and then sort them backward.

Hi Bluestar ,

I think repeating digit sequence backward involves lot of concentration and i think it should deal with long term memory  .

for example counting from 100...backward to 99,98,97...,

anybody would like to give feedback ?
thanks...

  #22

OK, Thank you very much.
