The purporse of episiotomy is?
A- prevent urinary stress incontinence after delivery
B- prevent rectal incontinece after delivery
C- make the perineum cosmetically more attractive by preventing tears.
D- permit easier passage of the fetus
E- decrease intrapartum bleeding.

D is the better option..but at times you have to give an episiotomy( infero-lateral) for a directed imminent tear...means it can prevent a bad fourth of third degree tear leading to incontinence..
