2. Is DPPC the main or the only component of pulmonary surfactant?
3. Is respiratory bronchioles the last segment of lung tissue?
4. What is HMP shunt?
5. Where does adrenal medulla arise from? Ectoderm, mesoderm or endoderm?
6. Is the secondary spermatocyte haploid or diploid?
7. What do epiblast and hypoblast derive to?
8. Which structure does 2nd pharyngeal pouch develop into?
9. Are JG (juxtaglomerular) cells from mesoderm?
10. Is zona reticularis secretion regulated by FSH and LH or by ACTH?
11. What are Nissl bodies? Where do they locate?
12. What is the limbic system?
13. Which structures are striatum composed of?
14. What is pope's blessing? (in ulnar nerve lesion)
15. What is Marcus Gann pupil?
16. What is medial longitudinal fasiculus syndrome? (associated with multiple sclerosis)
17. What is Saturday night palsy? (in radial nerve lesion)

dear all, any answer please? thanks.

#1, first aid says that mast cells resemble basophils structurally and functionally but are not the same cell type. so i am wondering where does mast cell come from and belong to?

  #4

Mast cells come from BM .. they are CD34+.. kinda like Granullocytes.

4. HMP shunt, shunts "glocuse" to RBC for NADPH production
5. Medula comes from neral crest cells, ectoderm.

14) What is Pope's Blessing?

Pope's blessing=Benectiction hand=Ape hand

It's a damage of Median N. I don't think it's ULNAR Nerve like u said but I could be wrong :?

It can occur as a result of supracondylar fracture, slashing of wrists, or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Pt. basically loses those hand functions related to median n. For instance, flexion of second and middle finger. Also, there is flat thenar eminence and some other losses grin
So, the second and third digits are extended and the rest (4th and 5th) are flexed (clenched). So, it looks like the pope is saying his stuff when he blesses u "nel nome del bla bla bla."

Test that is used for this is to ask pt to make an O with the thumb and pointer. I think positive sign is when pt can't do this action :?

Pneumonic I use to remember hand problems is:
DR CUMA

wrist Drop  Radial N
claw hand  Ulnar N
ape hand  Median N

17. What is saturday nite palsy?

Hehehehe. The guys should know about this. What happens after a weekend nite out with friends? You get so drunk that friends have to walk you home, carrying your shoulder around their neck. This can cause damage to the Radial N and loss of hand extension  wrist drop.
Other causes are: badly fitted crutch, sleeping on a chair with the arm hanging in a bad position, or fracture of the mid shaft of humerus.

11.) What are Nissl bodies and their location?

As far as I remember, these are colored structures, consisting of Rough ER. Are important in protein formation. Are only found in the cell body of the neuron and the dendride. No where else. I've seen a question b/4 asking for the location.

15. What is Marcus Gunn pupil?
Well, I'll give u a case since it will be easier to remember.

A 50 y/o male presents with visual difficulties. When dr. shines light into her right eye, there is no response in either eye. When he tries the other eye, pupillary responses in both eyes are apparent. Lesion is R. Optic N.

This is a Marcus-Gunn pupil, in which there is a lesion in the OPTIC nerve (in the afferent limb of the pupillary light reflex).

The way I remember Pupillary Reflex is IN on 2 (CN 2), out on 3 (CN 3). In marcuss gunn, CN 2 is not working.

Hmmm, what is Argyll Robertson pupil? What processes are intact and which not. Nerves involved?

Argyll robertson pupil is absence of miotic reaction to light, so no constriction with both direct and consensual reactions, but accomodation and convergence are conserved. May be present in syphillis, diabetes, or lupus smiling face

hi, bela, thanks for your answers. they are easy to remember. for the pope's blessing question, the answer in utah website is ulnar nerve instead of median nerve. so i am quite confused. is pope's blessing the same as ape hand?

  #11

I recall Pope's Blessing as being loss of innervation of the intrinsic muscles of the hand due to ulnar nerve lesion and Ape Hand as being a median nerve lesion due to loss of mainly thumb functions.

  #12

CanStep, so Ape Hand is not Benediction Hand? Cuz I was under the impression they're the same thing. That's why when sing mentioned Pope hand, I assumed it was the same as above.

Could u be kind to include the book/site where u read about the pope hand?
thnx

Ape hand = Benediction Hand which basically due to supracondylar fracture of humerus. This is in high yield, but i don't know if Pope hand is the same as these.

Popes Blessing is definately not Ape (Simian) Hand
.. I remember this from Anatomy class way back when... Popes Blessing is an ulnar nerve lesion and Ape Hand is a median nerve lesion.

I'm a bit confused about Benediction Hand.. not sure where that falls.. but this is what I found just now.. seems Benediction Hand falls under median nerve lesion along with Ape Hand. Are Ape Hand and Benediction hand similar? I do not know?
http://pediatricneuro.com/alfonso/pg224.htm
Is the distinction that if its an intra-uterine median nerve lesion or a chronic median nerve lesion that it produces an Ape Hand where as an acute median nerve lesion resembles Benediction hand?

  #15

Flattened thenar eminence = Ape hand
When patiet is asked to make a fist, the index and middle fingers remain straight while the ring and little fingers flex = Benediction Hand
