Why is heartburn increased in pregnancy? Is it because HCl production is increased or because of something else? Please, any help is apreciated. Thanks!

Well if you think about it, the growing size of the fetus starts to take up the entire abdominal cavity which will cause reflux. That's one reason. Progesterone also plays a role. Maybe someone else knows the specific effects it has on the lower esophageal sphincter.

In pregnancy, the tone of the LES is increased, increasing the chances of reflux, also the gastric emptying time is increased from the normal 2-2 n half hrs to >4hrs.i m not sure if HCL production increses or not.

gravid uterus pushes the diaphragm upwards which causes acid reflux as well as progesterone decreases the tone of LES which contributes to the acid reflux.....

Relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter is the main reason.
