what's PAS staining?

  #2

Periodic acid-Schiff staining stains glycogen, neutral mucins, and basement membranes. It also stains colloid material of the thyroid and the pars intermedia of the pituitary; certain sialomucins and sulfomucins also stain (sialomucins are found in the small intestine). Amyloid also gives a weak reaction.

Tissues that are strongly PAS positive include the liver, kidney, the small intestine, and the kidney. PAS positivity appears as a magenta colour (which is a result of Schiff's reagent staining).
