tdbchoco, I started my study with behav sci, and I am studying from HY Fadem. Many many concepts that you can read in Kaplan books are more clear in HY. I like the "Patient snapshot", so you can apply many concepts to an specific case. Sometimes behav have many abstracts ideas, so for me HY, it´s a good book to study.

Cherryho, Thanks! I think, I am going to study in the Kaplan NL. I was reading some chapters, and it´s more easy to study in those books than the Home Study. Thanks again Cherry, and good luck for your next Step.

Hi cherryho Thank you for the advice. Can u pls paste the webpath site address? And I tried to study Goljan acid base(for the second time) - the anion gap part is tough.... is it very important to know the anion gap metabolic acidosis? I have done the whole Goljan RR once and certain chapters twice and listened to all his lectures once / but now I'm thinking of doing only FA cos I have only 3 weeks..... is that a bad idea? Sorry to trouble you with loads of questions. Tc

You can use the mnemonics in FA and read FA more times. Doing more Qs also helps. FA doesn't cover everything so you might need Kaplan LN to refer to once in a while. If it's a disease caused by enz deficiency, try to single out ONE symptom that is unique to the disease. Good luck.

Hi cherryho, I have some Questions to ask , since your responses are always helpful. 1) There are days when I just do not want to study. How do I keep my motivation high always. 2) My brain does not seem to retain anything somedays. How do I make use of my brain productively? 3) My study plans do not work all the time. How do I keep going without being nervous 4) That dread of , "what if" I am going to fail 5) How did you relax? 6) How many hours did you study, how did you take breaks, how many hours did you sleep? Kindly respond. Thanks as always. Regards, sm

sm, 1. Try to study at least a couple of hours a day. Even an hour helps. Just make yourself pick up the book, then you'll do it. 2. Maybe you can learn to use the down time at work or at home to study. It's actually a more efficient way. Bring your FA and a pen everywhere you go. You can study even when you have only 5 min. This way you won't get sick of it that easily. 3. The bottomline is you can "at most" extend your study timeline twice as long. Anything longer than that is unacceptable. Figure out what distracts you. Take some vacation if you really need it. 4. Don't set a goal that is not really achievable (e.g. score > 260, or want 99 when you are only the 80 level). Just don't think that scores are everything. For application other things might matter more. I know somebody who got into a very good program with only 88/92/Pass. 5. I like watching TV. Sometimes I study with the TV on. The thing is I really enjoy studying so I don't get stressed out by study. Along the way I did feel that I improved day by day. That was a good feeling. If your study is efficient you'll feel the same way. 6. The first three month I had to work, even on the weekends. So I could only study 4-6 hrs after I was back from work. The last month I convinced my boss to give me a whole month off (I am a graduate student in my final year). That was the time I started doing Q bank. I usually take breaks between sections of a books or Q bank sessions. I use the break time to do housework or run some errands. I sleep a lot (8-9 h? until I wake up) and go to bed while I don't feel sleepy. Hope my answers help. Good luck.

Hi cherryho, You are such an inspiration! Your answers reflect maturity, kindness and patience. I will take your advice to heart. If you do not mind, may I ask why you had a gap of 5 years (I think this is what you mentioned in your posts earlier), before you took your usmle step 1? Did your physician husband guide you all along too? Kindly reply. Thanks a lot again. Regards, sm.

sm, I came to US for my PhD right after I graduated from med school in my home country. It took me 5 yrs and I am actually the one that graduates earlier ( damn graduate school!). I love research and thought I would become a scientist. But around the end of last year I changed my mind after long consideration (it's a long story involving both personal and professional reasons). That's why there's a gap. My husband is an AMG. So is his sister. They left a few really old prep books for me. They did tell me how important FA and Kaplan Q bank are. But it seemed to me that they didn't care about the exams as much as the IMGs do. Other than that I didn't really get many tips from them.

Hello, congrats on the great score? I have a q, do you recommend using FA right from the beginning and jot notes on it while reading the big books? Since I have no idea how I should use my FA... Thank you

Hi Sergey, It's good to use FA from the beginning as an accessory study material with the bigger books so you don't need to spend extra time reading it. FA also helps you pick up the HY info from the other books, esp the mnemonics, better know them earlier. The closer towards your exam day the more you'll realize how great it is to have a concise review book with all notes on it. You can pretty much go through it in a couple of days.
