Kaplan Qbank USMLE

This is to encourage the depressed ones. There is always light on the other side of the tunnel. I graduated in 2005 from India, migrated to usa with a green card and stayed with my parents. I was an average student in my medical college and thought that I would do well with hard work. I studied for 6 months for step1 and got a score of 78. I was depressed as hell. So I stopped praying blamed God and my family for this. But With my family’s support and lessons from these forums, I recovered and thought that I am a GC holder so I can apply for 2007 match with step 1 score only. I did get 1 interview with family practice and thought if I get 90+ in step2, I would still get into internal medicine next year. I put in only 3 months and read only Kaplan for step2……guess what?.......I failed step2 from 1 mark. Life couldn’t get worse and I stopped even thinking about IM, now my only aim was to pass the exam and get something but this time I didn’t stop praying. I had no choice but to try again. I found study partners on the forum read different books and in about 4 months took step2 again. I knew I had prepared very well as my study partners scored in 90s…… But guess what happened this time?......I got a panic attack during the exam but still managed to get 82. Soon after step2 I joined research. Even that wasn’t easy. Applied to about 60 positions for research and got this job. And also did observership for a couple of months in a very renowned Dr. Clinic (he was no friend of my dad…..I made effort with my communication skills to get this job, again this wasn’t easy). I also did a job in a store to keep myself busy and there I met this doctor who was looking for a medical assistant.

So with these experiences I applied for 2008 match. I got 3 interviews. One from the hospital where I was doing research work in pediatrics(I straight away went and talked to the program director and showed my interest in the program, though this was a very good program, they didn’t take fmg and required only scores more than 82 in 1st attempt). They really liked my honesty and hard work . Second interview from Family practice because I had done some deliveries in my ob gyn posting in internship (this was also a very good program). For my third interview I was screened on phone by the assistant program director who liked my LORs and the he did read my application thoroughly and realized how hard working I was. (this assistant PD himself had scored very less in the exams and believed that scores have nothing to do with being a good doc).

I worked very smartly for the interviews. I may not be a good test taker but I am confident that my communication skills are impressive…….guess what?......all 3 PD were impressed by me. All 3 promised me a seat and I got matched in my 1st choice(IM in univ program).

My families best wishes, their praying for me day and night and my hard work paid off. So I now believe that we should never stop trying. Even if God doesn’t give us some things the way we want, we should discover other ways to get them, (even if I didn’t have good scores, I had GC and experience and communication skills)…….guys plz continue to wok hard!!!!!!
