Hi,

How long do you have to work as a doctor in IM after residency on H1b before you can get a green card? Can you get it immediately after residency? That would be great when you apply for fellowship.

Once you complete a residency on H1b visa, you need to find an employer who will sponsor your green card. Once you have that, you contract yourself to them to work for 2-3 years. You will be able to get the greencard in 6 months to a year, then finish your committment to your employer.

BBB:

That´s sounds good. So one year after residency on H1b I will have my green card and thus be able to apply to all fellowship programs!

Just one question: If I sign a contract that says I will work for a certain hospital for 3 years, would´t it be expensive for me to break my part of the deal and leave them after just one year?

After residency, you will need to find an employer to sponsor your green card.

And if you are planning on breaking your contract NOW, before you even have one - I have one word for you.

ETHICS

You want an employer to sponsor your green card and you don't intend on holding up to your end of the agreement? Shame on you.

Definitely well-said bbb! It's people like that who put down IMGs. It's harder but you can get a fellowship on H1B.

BBB: I misunderstood your message. I thought you meant that I should finish my comittment before those 2-3 years. That sounded strange, that´s why I asked. Sorry if I upset you and the others.

Whew!!! that's a relief. Now, we will take our knives out of your back and all play nice with each other. Good luck in your search for residency.

Contracts are employer specific. You make your terms with them. As for hurting your fellowships, if that is your prime goal, then join a residency on a J1 visa, do your fellowship, then find a waiver position.

You have to make your choices here - green card or going home?

but is finding a waiver for im subspecialities easy?

  #15

In 20 years of working in residency, I know of less than residents that have gone home because they couldn't "find" a waiver position. The truth is they didn't want to go where they did find a waiver.

p.s. And yes, this includes fellows that I know of.
