Married 78 yrs odl man is brought to the ER after ingesting ten 15 mg temazepam tabletes. He is stabilized and undergoes psychiatric evaluation. Most important in assesing his risk for suicide is?
1.pt. belief that temazepam would kill him
2.male gender
3.marital status
4.family history of suicide
5.early morning awakening and dicr. appetite
Please, any thoughts? I appreciate any help.

1?

I will go with choice # 5 because early morning awakening and decreased appetite are signs of depression...so depression---> suicide

  #4

I think 1 because of previous atempt for suicide?

  #5

May be I did not get the question...where is previous attempt come from? He is in ER overdosed right? So this is his first attempt...I am a little bit confused at this point...

Any patient that tries it once (it has to be defined if THIS was accidental or intentional) has more chance of trying and even succeed in the future.

He is in ER because he tried to kill himself with taking ten tablets to temazepam. That was his first attempt. He believes that temazepam could kill him, and he will do it again

1.

Previous attempt of suicide is the #1 risk factor. If he thinks temazepam would have killed him, this was a suicide attempt and therefore puts him at high risk for another attempt..
