Hi,

I will be 32 years old when I start residency, four years after I graduated from medical school. Will I be considered as an old grad?

Will I improve my chances of getting into a good residency if I try to do the tests faster and start residency one year earlier? (31 years old, three years after graduation)

old grad....as i know tchnically does not apply to ur chronological age.. i guess its the years since u graduated from med school...that is years since graduation.... 4 years is technically old grad..but if u have been doing something substantial it does not matter i guess..!!! (provided u dont have gaps in the c.v)..... for some schools i cheked >5 years is old..so i guess i varies too....

about your age..thats not a an issue coz most american grads are around that age too...!!!

i answered both ways coz i had a doubt about it too earlier....sorry if thats not what u wanted...smiling face

thanks!

Great reply!

Where´s the cut-off for being an old grad for most programs? 1,2,3,4 years?

  #4

For some programs it's 3, for some it's 5. They state it in their websites. nod

age is nota problem... fresh grads are preferred by uni programs and people who have exp after graduation are generally okay with comm, uni affiliated places.. no set rules though but follow the program criteria for screening applicants. You dont wanna waste ur money on some place which has a graduation cut off of 2 years.

So I´ll have to do with comm. programs? I would definately like to do a univ. program.

The problem is that I have to do a 21 month internship after graduation, eberybody has to in Sweden. That internship finishes in September, so I´ll have to wait one year for applying since I´ll have to do the test before handing in my application.

I bet if you take time to research the criteria, you'll find good university programs with 5 years cut, and if you have good scores, you'll be able to belong to one of them. Cross that bridge when you get there. Right now, start getting information about the process, maybe even reading some step 1 material... You know, rules are bent sometimes, and what is yours, is yours... wink
