I was wondering what you guys think is better between these options:

An Externship (involves direct interaction with patients like taking histories, doing physical exams, writing soap notes, etc...) in Private Practice...and additionally doing rounds in the hospital(s) of the attending.....
OR
An Observership in a University affiliated hospital like UCLA or Cedars.....no direct patient contact...just shadowing the attending....but its a major university hospital

Thanks alot for your input!

I'd first consider the time length for which you're getting these positions and pick the longer one ( not if its too long) Also, I'd consider the reputation of the Doctors you'd be working under, the chances of getting an LOR and the kind of patients you'll be seeing. If both are comparable in these respects, I'd pick externship.

On a second thought, I think I'd pick externship irrespective of the factors i mentioned. grin Good luck!

Thanks alot for your advise!

Do you think 4-5 weeks for each LOR is sufficient?......I'm doing one externship now and its been 5 weeks....I plan on ending it now and starting a different externship, since I need a different LOR......

I'm trying to get 3 US LORs,...each experience being for one month.....however it seems I'll probably have 2 because I'll take some time off to do a final review and take the Step 2 ck....

After my exam I'll do some more USCE, but they will be during my application period so I won't get any letters....but I heard letting the Programs know is a good idea......
