Paneth cells are found in the small intestine but not in the large intestine. These cells help to defend the small intestine against certain bacteria by secreting lysozyme, an antibacterial enzyme.

They are functionally similar to neutrophils. When exposed to bacteria or bacterial antigens, Paneth cells secrete a number of antimicrobial molecules into the lumen of the crypt, thereby contributing to maintenance of the gastrointestinal barrier. They produce alpha defensin
