Well, there have been simliar questions on here before and Justice always picks observerships over research.. But to say the least, University programs usually prefer research over observerships. Community programs dont care about research as much. To generalise Clinical electives/ externships >> Research ( with publication +- LOR) >> Observership ( with LoR) >> Research ( incomplete/no publication)

This is about university-based programs, isn't it? Research does not count as much as you want it to be... Finally, it's up to you to do whatever you want, I am just giving you an advice, a free advice...

That sure is impressive Justice. I am sorry if i offended you in anyway. But, i guess it just varies among PDs then. Cos i am not making up any of that stuff that i said. I had an opportunity to talk with a PD at a very reputed University Program and I asked him what he looked for in a resident. And, any research experience was way higher than an observership on his list. Anyways, Good luck for the match!

No offense, Hitesh... It does depend upon the program, it's PD and his twisted mind... Yes, I will be enjoying match 2009 season with you, guys... My personal problem is that I am a 1998 year graduate, and maybe that's why they want me to get exposed to patients before they say they love my research... Doing research for less then 1.5-2 years is, from my point of view, useless, because it will not results in a good, full-length paper in a decent peer-reviewed journal, or awesome research skills...

Well, there's a catch 22 .. A short duration research doesnt get good results and if done for a longer term like in your case, keeps you out of clinical practice for that long. But, personally, I feel one should not get into research, just to get a residency spot or just 'cos it looks good on the resume. Get in if you're really inclined. But then, thats just me.

okay people...i agree wid justice.. i was offered a research position..believe me it takes hell lot of time and lots of work to do... and i was nt guaranteed of my name published in journal. the research co-ordinator himself told me that people who are old graduate join research in usa so that they can show to pd that they were nt lazy in usa..he was nice fellow and said that join research prog if i dont get match this year [as i am recently graduated].. so do research if you are old graduate and you are guaranteed of your name published in journal otherwise dont do it...its expensive and requires lot of work
