From my understanding, I am not eligible for a medical licence. I got my ECFMG certification. Not taking step 3. Not into a residency. But today, the physician I am shadowing asked me whether I want to see patients. And he asked me whether I had a state licence. I said no, of course no. He said, how could you be a resident without a licence, how could you write prescriptions without a licence? I didn't know how to answer.

Anyone has any idea?

so u are an observer right? then u dont need a license because u arnt supposed to write prescriptions or see patients unsupervised (ur supposed to be the "shadow"!)...if u are doing any of those then well it isnt really legal...
to some extend medical students can do that cause they are in a accredited training program...
for a license a complete or a limited one (like residents get) u need to be scheduled to enter into a training prog for residency first

or did i get the question wrong?

If you are a resident, your work is undersupervised by licensed attendings.

How long may we get a license? Dendending on sates.

e.g.

In CA, IMGs needs to finish 2nd year residency to get a license.

In Texas, IMGs needs to complete his/her 3 year residency to get a license.

Hi Robin

Do you mean IMGs have to go through two seperate Residency training programs to get
Physician license?

What the physician means is that whether I can see patients without any supervision. He wants me to help him that way instead of just observing. But obviously I could not, based on my own understanding and your answers. Thanks for your kind and prompt responses.

Requirements for residency are different for different states. Some need no license at all to work as a resident, Some need you to register with the state board as a postgraduate trainee and some states will need you to have a license.

Illinois give a temporary license for the first year of residency, then you pass the step3 (if you didn't already, in another state), and get the permanent one.

You can't share the work with the doctor ( definetly!) njcjzy. That would be very risky for both of you.

No,

I edited my post to make it clearer.

In CA, IMGs needs to finish 2nd year residency to get a license.

In Texas, IMGs needs to complete his/her 3 year residency to get a license.

there is something called temporary physicians license, which can be obtained without step3 but you do need to be a part of a residency program.

In Georgia, I was told that you could only get a licence after three years of residency training.

Point is..... an observer does not need a license as he is just an observer.

You can find your state requirements to achieve a temporary licesnse; some states like IL and PA have temporary licenses and may have individual requiremnets..but if your physician wants you to work.. make sure you have appropriate visa. ( I am assuming you need visa to work)
