getting the name right is important...if u forget, as I often did, practise such that u dont need to say it too many times (i think u "need" to say it just once when u address the patient at the beggining) for the rest just say 'thank you so much for ur time/co-operation' and stop at that....no jhanjhat of ms smith vs ms jones...
saying thank you too many times wont deduct any points I think but if u feel its too much there isnt any other thing I can say but practise and then practise some morenod
One thing that worked very well for me...if u can practice with someone who as taken the test recently and passed....it is of great help...and a great confidence builder

mukho, I've read that you must use the patient's name occasionally. I actually end up using 'Sir' or 'Ma'am' coz I'm scared to get it wrong, and it's awkward to look at my clipboard. Then I end up with too many Sir's and Ma'am's.

Haha, arlete. Now THAT"S the sign of true friendship.....willingness to share swear words!! sticking out tongue

Also, I'm so fluent in English, but my counselling comes out all fragmented, and I use words and sentence constructions I'd never use in real life. Then I stop and start all over again. It sounds so stunted. Practice, practice, practice, practice......

And, on I plow.....

Paheli, They will shred the paper, not you. LOL... please dont give them a torn scrap paper, who knows it might just count as 'irregular behaviour'...

As for saying 'thank you' a lot, i think its cool, as long as its not inappropriate in context of the conversation.

Using patient's name once or twice is good enough to get that check mark.. ( i think).. So, once you 've done that, i think saying 'sir' or ''ma'am'' is better than saying the wrong name.

Arlete: I had practised a case of hypertension with you, and you(SP) had used the word, 'water pill' and at that time I wasnt aware of what it meant and i asked you(SP).. I cant remember them from the top of my head, but there were a lot more things i learned from you, that helped me on the exam.. Thank younod! ... ( i pull a 'paheli' when i talk to arlete... i say 'thank you' a lot.. grin)

Mukho, arlete, can you give me all the tips you can on a phone case. I know it's supposed to be easier on the whole, but what do I need to watch out for, and what to specifically concentrate on?

Thanks!

Learn the ONCALLIDIOT mnemonic, remember to say you need to examine the patient, offer social service help if any problems bringing him in, or even calling 911 for the transport to be taken care of.

I didn't have a phone case.

Oh, very quick reply, arlete, I so appreciate it! Is that mnemonic on csprotocol? coz I didn't see it.

Do I offer to call 911? or tell the caretaker to do it pronto?

Yes, the blog has it.

The mother should call, but first say the social worker can provide an ambulance service for her. It depends on how grave the situation is.

Can I summarize the Hx while washing my hands prior to P/E? It will save so much time.

Thanks again.

Ideal would be to be face to face with the patient when you summarise. The patient should feel that the information is important.. But if you're running short of time,(e.g. if you've already had the 5 min warning), then yes, you can summarise while you're washing hands..

I used that time to talk to the patient .. like something abt his hobbies, or abt his occupation or his plans for summer... whatever... just to lighten up the mood and make him/her more comfortable.. But take care to sound professional while u do that, dont get carried away.. grin
