My first: Can we get pregnant patients?

Thank you so much.

Be prepared for the empathy part - what if you get a pregnant teen who will not be happy with the diagnosis. She will be visible upset - "my life is doomed, if i am pregnant". Best way to deal with that is tell them to watch the movie "Juno"sticking out tongue

They may say it either way. They may say "water pill" for diuretic, too.

Ok, forget about the "juno" part. I am serious, be prepared what you will say to a pregnant teen who is very upset.

All the patients in FA state only generic names. I wonder if they'll do it differently in the real thing.

Maybe someone who knows more can shed more light.

they do use brand names.....however, during my exam unless it was tylenol, mortin, lasix or something that well known the SP would have their medications written out on a paper (especially if it was a multidrug regimen)...and I always copied it down...if I didnt understand what it was...i just wrote it down anyways!
I was lucky I didnt have the combination of being given a drug I didnt recognise and then asked what is it for?? but if that would have happened I would have said ' I'm sorry I dont recall the exact details of this drug, will look it up and get back to u ASAP'

I think it's OK not to know, although I think they will not make it very complicated most of the times. I think the way you deal with it is what is being tested. Just be humble and show that understanding everything about the patient's condition is more important than proving you know all the drugs. Remember to thank the patient for colaborating with you.

The initial sheet of paper in which I jot down the Hx is a mess, is this ok? Does it play a role in the final grade? What do they do with it once they take it away from us?

Also, when taking Hx, how much can I write? Sometimes I pause for 10-15 secs writing down quickly what the SP just told me[hence the messy writing]. Are such brief pauses ok? Does everyone do it?

Thanks so much!

Be the neatest you can. The PN is the only part of the test that is evaluated by doctors. Start the PN writing the DD and W/U first. Try and be organized and select what the most relevant positives and negatives are to be there. If it's a 75 yo woman having a stroke, it doesn't matter when her menarche was...

No, arlete, My PN looks ok, and I've been doing what you told me before about starting off with DD and Labs. My qn was about the scrap sheet we use WHILE taking Hx. We do get one, right?

They just shred the scrap paper, its never used for evaluation. It can be as messy as you want it to be.

Abt, the drugs. They do use some common brand names like tylenol, advil etc. There's a good list of common brand names on www.csprotocol.blogspot.com . And as arlete said, one of my patients did use the word 'water pill'. Thanks to arlete, I knew what he meant grin I wouldnt have, had she not told me.

yeah they just throw away the scrap...no role in grading

i always asked my SPs before starting if it was ok that i took some notes (never considered what would happen if they said dont!!) and then i too used to pause a bit...as long as it doesnt take away time from u I think u'll be fine

thanks hitesh..

You can even write down some bad words in your own language in that paper, just to calm down, cause nobody will read it! wink

hitesh, can I shred it? I thought I was to hand it in. It won't look very nice if I give it to the procter in little little pieces that fly away everywhere!grin

mukho, I find it hard to keep my cases straight after 4 or 5 cases. I even keep glancing at my sheet to get the patient's name right! It's awful, I know! But, I feel it's better than saying, 'Thank you, Ms Jones....errrmmm ummm, Ms Smith. I'm really sorry!!shaking head' I would have a heart attack if that were to happen!disapproval

arlete, thanks for the bad-word tip, to release stress. But the only bad words I know are actually in English, so the SP would have no trouble figuring it out! So, I think it's a bad idea in my case!sticking out tongue

I have another problem, guys. I think I'm saying 'Thanks' too much. I even say it after some of the SPs answers. It sounds really funny, but it's quite strange! Help me! sad
