Anorexia: painfully thin, BMI very low, fine body hair [vellus], amenorrhea, she doesn't eat in public

Bulimia: Normal to slightly overweight, hence appropriate BMI, normal menses, calluses at back of hand, dental caries

Eating disorder not otherwise explained: a mix of symptoms of the above 2, not very clear differentiation

Does this clarify??

psych here...

if she is less than 85% of expected weight (BMI < 17.5), she has anorexia nervosa
if she does not binge or purge, it is anorexia, restrictive subtype
if she binges or purges, it is anorexia, binge-purge subtype

it is not the eating behavior that defines anorexia or bulimia, since 50% of anorectics binge...

weight is the most important criterion that differentiates anorexia from bulimia...

if she is above 85% of expected weight, by definition, she cannot have anorexia nervosa...

Anorexia nervosa: Familial conflict (often in mom-girl relationship: maybe Oedipal phase from Freud's theory). Therefore, the girl wanna get the "PERFECT" (ex: She was a good student).
