Hi, I was out of clinical practice for 7 years but recently did externship for 3 months. I want to apply for residency in illinoi but I have heard that The illinoi department of professional regulations require the physicians who are out of practice to work before they grant license for starting residency. Does any one know about this? Does my externship count towards experience? Also I am not sure whether I need the licence before I apply for residency in illinoi.

Hi, I am just curious as to how you obtained externship seeing as you were out of practice for 7 years. Do you have any tips regarding that? I know this does not answer your question, but your reply would help a lot of us.

You are going to ask for a temporary license (actually the hospital is going to ask in your behalf) when you are approved by a residency program. Then they will evaluate your cv, you are going for an interview and they will tell you if they give you or not. They don't check your credentials if there's no program wanting you. They have a list of what may be considered "meaninful clinical experience", but don't exactly say what, when and for how long they need to be, and they state "not limited to", so it's difficult to be certain. I think 3 months of externship will be counted, but if you can do something else, for longer, I bet it will help you a lot.

By the way, our situation is extremely similar!

Good luck (for both of us)! smiling face

Rab - sorry, but it's Illinois - the "S" is at the end although it's not pronounced. Well, unless you are watching Dr. Phil - then it's pronounced
