U need to submit lors by aug 1st, in order to be sure that they are scanned and in ur file by sep 1st which is when the applications start. Any lor that u get later can be updated later in ur eras, also when u go to programs for iv u could take the new lor with u and ask the program coordinator to put a copy in ur file. Most programs keep updating ur application when it is updated in eras but some programs dont depending on the number of applications they have already received....
People do observerships as late as nov and dec.

Sending LORs before Aug 1 is useless as the ERAS post office opens on Aug 1. Usually it takes 10-15 days for them to scan the letter. They will not be uploaded until after you actually applied to the program. This means that initially you apply with just an info on how many LORs you send and who the writes are. ERAS will attach the scanned LORs later, within a few days. Sending LORs in September does not hurt at all, so do your USCE, obtain the LOR, and send it ASAP.

JUL 1
MyERAS opens. Once you have registered, start sending your supporting documents to ECFMG. Due to the heavy volume of documents received, the lead time for scanning and uploading documents to the ERAS PostOffice is up to four weeks. The ERAS PostOffice opens September 1. We suggest that you submit your documents to ERAS Support Services at ECFMG in time to arrive by August 1.

SEP 1
The ERAS PostOffice opens. You can start using the MyERAS website to transmit your Common Application Form (CAF), Profile, and Personal Statement(s) to the ERAS PostOffice.

SEP 2
ECFMG starts to transmit supporting documents that have been received and scanned. ECFMG will continue to scan and transmit documents every business day through May 31, 2008, and will continue to update/transmit ECFMG status reports and USMLE transcripts every business day through May 30, 2008.

Thats from the timeline of 2008 Match....Sending LORs before Aug 1 has a possible advantage... the time spent in reaching ECFMG and their scanning of the document is reduced...but Justice is right in saying that the LOR will be uploaded into ERAS system only when u assign the LOR for a program in ur ERAS application...
Sending LOR in sept indeed doesnt make too much of a difference, just that the LOR reaches ur programs a few days after one that u would have been submitted in august and assigned on 1st of sept...But if later USCE is in ur timeframe it still wont cause any worries (I submitted all my US LORs after Sept and the last one in November)

Is it compulsory to have AAMC ID printed on them by the writer and also that he mentions whether i waive my right or not as per ERAS guidelines? If they are without them would they still accept them or are they very rigid on it?

Would it be acceptable if the ID is written on the back of them in pencil, as was mentioned in this forum in some thread?

they did accept one LOR of mine without the AAMC ID or waiver mention...so i guess they will take it, but it might seem a bit slip shod to the interviewers...
if u intend to send in all ur lors like that it would be best to email this query to eras support, they are pretty good with answering....
