I got B1/B2 for 10 years for CS exam. Now I am also havng an offer of observership. Can I complete my exam as well as observership in a single stay ? ( 4 months). Because in Visa application my purpose of visit is only to take exam.

depends on the official at the port of entry...if u have any paper showing that u have observership requiring u to stay for such and such a period, u could show the officer that or just say u wanted to stay back and spend some time sight seeing with family (if u have any in US) ....they do give upto 6 mnths on request ( gave me!) but largely depends on the officers perception of whether ur staying is justified or not...

Love ur avtaargrin!!

Hi,

I got a single entry visa for the CS exam. when i entered US at chicago I told them about the observerships and they gave me 6 months stay.

problem is my stay expires on nov 12. can i ask for 45 days extension so as to finish all my interviews? or do i have go back to india and then come again?

Don't interviews run until the end of January?

I see. Of course you could ask to have your i-94 extended, just make sure you do it 2 months or so before it expires. Just download the forms and write a letter stating the need for an extension (explain the interview and matching process). I don't see how you could go back to India in November and then be back for interviews in the US in such a short span of time. Considering you would have to take your chances in renewing your visa, I would say go extend..maybe til January for the late interviews.

Just my 2 cents smiling face

Thanks xthine

Which is what i thought, but i read somewhere( maybe this forum itself) that if you extend B1/B2 visa, you may have problems when u go for the J1/H1b visa for starting the residency....

would like more opinions on this

No problem at all. I've heard about those too and it has proven to be true in my experience. Last year for the CS I was on a single entry visa, had i94 extended (reason to await CS results and take Step 3) and granted, with only an additional 2 months (I asked for 6). So i had to go back to my home country and get a new visa. I was given one but the consul said that the next time I try to apply for a visa I would have a hard time since I stayed in the US for 5 months plus I need to establish stronger ties to my home country. I am now back here in the US for Step 3, will go home in July and then come back for the IVs. I know how hard it is to mull over visa issues at the same time review for the MLEs. Don't worry i'm sure you'll come to the most rational decision with the help of people around you.

So it's all up to you..just like any other case weigh the benefits vs risks. smiling face
